Any builders / plasterers on here please?

We recently stripped the wallpaper that they had put in before we moved in and OH boy it was a complete mess. Plaster had been skimmed over walls which had smooth paint on under it and all the plaster fell off immediately and there were huge holes filled in with silicone.

We had a guy come out and ordered the plastering to be done and they have but it's an utter balls up again.

The plasterer has skimmed the walls again and it must be at most 1mm thick and in some parts you can still see the original wall underneath.

We have a surveyor coming out tomorrow and we want some ammo if there is any so we can get a proper job done as what was a weekend re-decorating job is turning into a month long nightmare. Are there any standards or regulations they MUST abide by at all?

The plasterer has even chipped a load of tiles and left bug gaping holes at the top where the wall meets the ceiling.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I hope you haven't paid them? you say there is smooth paint under the skim,it sounds like silk emulsion. Sounds like they haven't keyed and sealed the the walls properly. If you tap along the wall does it sound hollow? if so then the whole lot will have to come off and started again. As for standards and regs, there is'nt really any regs that govern plasterers like it does plumbers and sparkys. My advice is if you haven't paid then DONT,ask they come back and do the job properly. If you have paid them then ask they come back and sort it, otherwise you will seek legal advise.

    Hope you get it sorted.

  • We don't pay them, the housing association do but it's just such a complete balls up we wanted to be able to say to the surveyor who's coming to check it... you have to do X, X and X.

Yep, some parts are hollow underneath, he was supposed to be taking those parts off and re-plastering it but I don't hink he has at all.

If I was doing it I would have taken it all back to the brick and plastered it from scratch. I've never seen such a bad job in all my life! If I was paying for it there would be BIG trouble!

    Cheers though :)

I agree with Jason, as in regulations, the first port of call would be your tenancy contract as that may state what their obligations to you as a tenant are. Just a thought..hope it helps.

Hopefully the surveyor will see all their shoddy work and get them back out, and make it clear your not happy at all. Thats the trouble with some councils(not all though) they try to get the job done cheaply and as quick as they can,so they knock off early.
