Getting Married Abroad

Hi,
My partner & I have been engaged for nearly 3 years now as we havent been able to afford getting married. We have only just been able to afford to buy our own house but this is a very run down way & all our money is going on trying to get it renovated (although thats not even happening at the minute either).
I have been previously married & feel really strongly that i dont want my parents paying for us to get married as they dont have any money (although they have offered) & my partners parents are now pensioners.
I have read through the details on saving money when getting married but unfortunately there doesnt seem to be anything on there about getting married abroad.
I have looked into different places all over the world but there seems to be alot of restrictions to getting married abroad & this seems costly.
Has anyone any ideas on how we could get married abroad the cheapest way possible? We arent concerned how or where anymore as we have been waiting so long and just want to become Mr & Mrs finally. Can anyone please help?
Thanks in advance.

It's not abroad but why not get married in another country.....Scotland.
Do the Gretna Green thing and when you get back home you can announce to your family that you've just got married.
This could be a cheaper way of getting married than going abroad and will avoid the family paying for the wedding.
There are lots of beautiful places to spend your honeymoon in Scotland.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the 'I wanna' and 'In my home' and Health & Beauty'' boards. If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. Thats a good idea. My friend has just done that a few weeks ago i think all in all it cost her about £1000 including somewhere to stay.
The only reason we're looking abroad is really because of my partner. Because ive been married before & he hasnt i thought it was only fair that it was somewhere he would be really happy getting married & if he could get his wish it would be mexico but the bank balance is more looking like Bogna at the minute. :-/ (not that im saying theres anything wrong with there, just not his dream.)0 -
me and the wifey ::)got married abroad last november and we worked out it would not cost any more(it was probably cheaper)than getting married in our local church.
we decided that we wanted to combine our marrage, honeymoon etc all in 1,get married abroad and have our holiday/honeymoon there as well.
we got married in new york city, you might think $$$ but no it was not alot of money thats if you are prepared to be a moneysavingexpert (or tight git as the wife likes to call me,haha)by constantly searching the internet for best flight/hotel/limo/and wedding venue prices.we managed to plan everything in 6-8 months.
we worked out that these packaged weddings abroad were very over priced so we booked everything seperate,to our own prefferences.
we decided to get married at the top of the empire state building, which we booked directly through them i think if i remember rightly it came to around £350,flights and 5 nights in a 4 star hotel hotel/stretch limo to and from jfk worked out at £750 for both of us. so a total of about £1100 for the whole thing(yeah cheapskates i know, lol) the only thing we had to do when we got to new york was get the marrage license at least 24 hours before the wedding from city hall before we could get married .
we had a fantastic time and would do it all again, lol.
p.s forgot to add the posh restraunt bill $400but thats optionable!

Alternatively, a registry office costs less than £100. Turn up, get married, leave. Simple really.
Not being able to afford to get married is very rarely the real problem. What you mean is that you cannot afford all the unnecessary expense that wedding magazines and wedding supplier companies insist that you need.0 -
Look into getting married at Niagara falls, with the pound so strong against the Canadian dollor you can do very well....plus it is a fantastic place.... 8)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Hello
My husband and I got married in May this year on the island of Mauritius and I can honestly say it was the best thing I've ever done. After watching so many other people getting so stressed out and having to organise every little detail of their own wedding I just thought 'I can't be doing with this'. So I went on the website: https://www.weddingsabroad.com which is well worth having a look at. There is a huge choice of destinations to choose from to suit a range of budgets. A week in 5* all inclusive accommodation plus the wedding ceremony cost us just over £3000 which seems like a lot but when you think about how much a normal wedding over here costs you it's really good value. On the website though you can either browse through all the options available or do what I did and simply send them an e-mail explaining your situation and requirements and a wedding co-ordinator will send you one back and give recommendations and advice etc.
The thing I loved most about getting married abroad was that there was just no stress whatsoever and the wedding co-ordinators literally organise everything for you, right down to the flowers and the cake for the day itself. We chose not to invite family and although I regret this a little it was nice not to have anyone fussing or causing hassle.
Personally I think that when it comes to weddings too many people worry about making their families and friends happy and having the wedding to beat all others and often lose sight of what the perfect wedding is. To me it was just amazing standing under a palm tree on the beach exchanging vows with my husband! Anyway I've rambled on for too long now... I would definitely recommend checking out that website and if it looks daunting just send an e-mail and wait for them to contact you. Hope you have a lovely wedding whatever you choose to do and a wonderful life together.
Lucy xxxx
P.S. If I can be of further help just let me know! ;D0 -
Talk to your local travel agent. They do great cheap packages for getting married.
Do remember that, despite it being your second time, have what you want as you don't want to look back and wish you'd spent an extra few quid.
I always say a wedding is something you shouldn't skimp on.
If you can't afford it now, save up and wait a bit longer. It'll be worth it.Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you![/SIZE]0 -
Hi My Partner & I looked at getting married abroad (Cyprus), rather than go for the "special wedding brochure" if you look at Cyprus (were we looked at) if you speak to Olympic Holidays they will do the legal work & license fee bits without you having to book your holiday with them, there are restrictions for times of marriage (civil is something like 9am -12pm, mon-wed & fri, 2pm - 6pm Thurs) and the types but the normal Cyprus wedding holiday brochures will tell you all that.
If you get Olympic to do your paperwork they will check everything before you go book the wedding service etc..... some of the fees are payable locally (about £200CY for the service I think) so you don't have to have that at the time of booking. This way you can get flights and contact the hotel/apartment block directly for better deal. You can usually get good deals for Oct as the end of the tourist season but still warm & sunny.
We used to live in Cyprus, the flowers/cakes are much cheaper to buy locally and unless you want something specialist (imported flowers) then you don't need the sort of notice you need in the UK, about 1 week and you will be fine. If you get a hire car and drive to a local village or speak to the hotel/apartment they will usually be able to recommend somewhere locally, I looked at bouquets for me and 3 bridesmaids, 10 table decorations, 2 as you walk into the reception, and button holes & corsages and it was going to cost me about £200 that was for roses & local flowers, the local flowers are much cheaper. For wedding cakes the ones they say in the brochure's are over priced compared if you look locally. Most of the time people out there are so friendly they will be able to assist, and you don't need as much notice, alternatively from the other thread, by a tesco's fruit cake iced and take with you, the airlines are normally pretty good if you tell them what it is they will do their best to get it safely! Or go for one of the gorgeous local gateaus! Good luck planning.
A couple of websites I found: https://www.cyprusweddings.com alternatively you could contact a local travel agent out there who will do it all for you via fax try Katrinatravel.com.cy they organised a friends wedding, including a meal for 20, after the service, coach for family etc...

Hello,
My wife and I got married Sept 12-2003 in Amalfi,Italy
If you have ever heard or read or seen images and reviews from Amalfi you will agree it is very very romantic and beautifull place.
We decided to get married here and we wanted our parents to be there with us to see the wedding.
We booked a villa on the amalfi coast for two weeks, this slept 8 people over three floors and had its own private jetty into the sea. and a small private pool.
We booked an Italian wedding planner based in Amalfi and we got cheap flights through BA from Manchester to Paris Paris to Naples, then a limo mini bus from Naples to our villa.
We booked the whole ceremony and accomodation over the internet, And it all went without any problems what so ever.
The flights were £200 each return.
Wedding organiser £800, this fee includes translator, venue, document preperation. and registration.
our villa for two weeks was £1200, this was for 6 people. this is just £200 per person.
Limo transfer was £100 return again one mini bus for 6 people.
the grand total for our wedding was £2500, this of course does not include clothes or the most important rings..
£2500 for a two week honeymoon and wedding in one of the most beautifull places in the world who can complain?
I can strongly recommend this as a location, we were married in a 13th century monks chapel, and we walked through the town of amalfi to our chosen restaurent for our wedding dinner.
During the 5 minute walk we were showered with flowers and coins from the local shop keepers, And tourists shook our hands, and took pictures.
I have never seen such a show of genuine heart felt joy in my life, the people of Amalfi are fantastic, and we were made very very welcome.
Good Luck with your wedding, if you fancy getting marrid in Italy, please contact me as we have some very very trustworthy contacts in this area of Italy.
