Where I live the aerials point in between transmitters at nothing. This was due historically to a split of transmitters between the Beeb and ITV. Now the split is due just to analogue Channel 5 . Due to the close proximity and high power a compromise can be made in this way. As it stands today only one transmitter broadcasts all digital channels exclusively. The digital channels are broadcast at a few percent of the analogue power and unless the aerial is targeted at the transmitter the digital results may be pants.
I don't know why I can't buy set top boxes in my local super/hyper markets despite requesting them to be stocked. Argos stock lots but there policy on returns for set top boxes stinks.

thanks. i checked that thread out, and boy are there a lot of pages on that thread! i read a few at the beginning and a few at the end. lol

it certainly sounds like my problem and I'd like to say that i DO have the inclination to try and update it, but i don't really know what i'm doing, so i think it might be best to just get a new box.

If you did want to update your box, You'd need this kind of cable.

Select the software you want to try from here

    and use these instructions.

Though you have to follow the instructions blind because they were written for the earliest software and the output the box sends to the computer is slightly different.

You might be right just to buy a new box rather than go to all that touble on a box that isn't known for its reliability

  • Beckie....why don't you go to Argos....buy one of their aerial boosters...try it...see if it improves your reception...if not take it back and get a refund. That way you have wasted nothing. One tip...after you have fitted the booster retune your freeview box.

I have a GDB2 and they are rubbish.

I was a member of another forum and someone from Goodmans actually used to go on the forum and answer questions. The consensus was that the software was buggy as hell. Eventually the Goodmans rep on the forum got them to update the software which made some things a bit better but then the GDB3 came out so they didn't bother with the GDB2 any more.

I have the same problems with my GDB2 now though, switching itself off or picture freezing up but sound carries on fine!

Thanks, Steve, for the tip about retuning after connecting the booster. Simple as it seems, we were racking our brains to find solution to our poor reception despite adding a booster and finding your comment (made 5 years ago!) after a Googling spree provided the answer that has solved the problem. Have an imaginary beer on us :D
