You will still receive your CB of £43.90pw
You will still receive DLA Mobility and care
    You will still receive CA

Your IS will be replaced with CTC which will amount to quite a bit with 3 children based on a £19000 salary.

    3 x £2085 (Child elements x 3)
    1 x £2540 (Due to child disablement)
    1 x £1020 (Due to severe disablement)
    1 x £545 (Family element)

Total £10,360 or £199pw alone in CTC (It may be slightly less due to the taper in place but it wont be much less based on £19k)

You will lose the ISMI for your mortgage
You will more than likely lose CTB
You will more than likely lose free school meals

Your BF may qualify for WTC though.

From that, you wont be that much worse off. Infact you'll be better off with the above + his income.

    OK will do.Thanks

I do expect to lose some money. And I would not let him live here without declaring it. Im so used to having my own money to pay for my own bills. Ive just been on my own too long.

Actually doing it all properly, you should both end up better off. They did a thing on TV about a family who were living on DLA/IS etc etc. The wife was considering going back to work but wasn't sure what would happen. The upshot was that although they lost IS, rent, CTB, what they gained with her wage (£6/hr) and tax credits meant they were £180 a week better off.

The Child Benefit and DLA aren't included in calculation of tax credit awards although the DLA should actually add approx £2500 to it.

It is the OP's daughter that gets DLA, and therefore the OP and her partner will not be eligible for the WTC disability premium.

Calculating it up, it amounts to a lot of money...

DLA for a severely disabled child who needs high rate mobility and care will receive...

    £67pw High care allowance
    £46.75pw High mobility allowance.

    This equates to £5915pa

CTC for a disabled child will be..

    £2085 + £2540 + £1020 = £5645pa

Then on top, the O.P will receive

    CTC of £2085 x 2 for her other 2 children + £545 family element £4715pa
    CB for 3 children £18.80 + £12.55+ £12.55 x 52 = £2282pa

    CA = £50.55pw x 52 = £2628pa

Total amount of benefits = £5915+£5645+£4715+£2282+£2629

    =£21,186pa or £1,765pm in benefits.(£407pw)

This does not include any help with school dinners, council tax, or housing.

With these figures in mind, to the O.P i would say dont worry about a thing. You are financially well looked after by the state and with your partners income on top i would assume you'll be financially quite well off. (Even if you do lose your CTB/ISMI and free school dinners)

I have based the figures on you having a severely disabled child like you stated in your O.P

    Now I feel guilty...........

Thank you everyone for putting my mind at rest. I honestly thought I was going to have to live the rest of my life on my own. I have found a wonderful man willing to take us all on but I was too afraid to make a serious commitment of living together because of financial reasons.

I really wish my life could be different and I worked two jobs until my daughter was born and even carried on until she was so poorly I had more time off than I was at work. I do understand why people that work all the hours god sends are bitter at people like me, but I am not the goverment and I did not make the rules up about benefits. My job is being a 24 hr carer with no breaks no escape day in day out.

Thankyou all so much for your advice and patience, it is very much appreciated.xx

Nothing to feel guilty for, if you equate your benefits to an hourly rate for the work that you do, some would argue that you deserve a lot more ...

Hope things go well for you missstropy, good luck x

  • Just wanted to say good luck to you all, and well done with coping with such difficult circumstances on your own for so long. No advice, but by the above workings out, go for it and enjoy the peace of having someone to share your life with. From the bottom of my heart, good luck hun, you sound like you deserve good things. xx
