You can use Skype to call mobile. You have to buy a subscription to "Skype Out" which lets you call Landlines or mobiles around the world.

There is also "Skype IN" that lets landlines and mobiles call your skype account. If your mother lives in spain then it is possible to get a Spanish "Skype IN" number so it's a local or regional call for her to call your computer insted of an international call.

Check the Skype site for full details.

    Hi there,

Yes you can, with Skype you can call any destination, mobile or landline as long as you buy Skype credit. Good option for inexpensive calls.

Even better, ask your mum to install SKype if she has internet as it would be free.

You could do, but actually Skype's tariffs aren't as good as some other options.

Skype would be nearly 18 pence a minute to a Spanish mobile, but using 18185 from your landline is 8 pence a minute, or one or two of the Betamax VoIP brands e.g JustVoip are a bit cheaper than that

If it's just one or two calls and you already have the Skype account, then fine, but if your mum is there all the time, I'd suggest setting up an account elsewhere

You might even use a mobile yourself; an Orange payg SIM on their new Camel tariff would charge 10p a minute to Spanish mobiles

I just realised I am actually on Tiscali which offers free calls to Spain to a landline, would that include a phone box? Say I got her to give me the phone number to a local phone box and phoned her there?

I agree with redux - I cannot recommend Skype for cheap calls to landlines/mobiles. Many of the direct dial providers are cheaper than Skype and you don't need anything other than your normal phone.

Currently the cheapest of the Betamax VoIP brands for Spanish mobiles is DialNow (http://www.dialnow.com/en/index.html) at 5.6p/min. If it's just a few calls, there are cheap providers on the International Callchecker (http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/intcallchecker/spain-mobile).

I currently use a different Betamax brand - Nonoh (www.nonoh.net) for calling Spanish mobiles. It's a bit more expensive than DialNow, but it's still a good price and I don't want to keep swapping providers every time prices shift.

That could work, if the phone number is published in the box, and if it accepts incoming calls, and if it's an ordinary landline number which would be at the same tariff to you.

Unfortunately, these might not all be true. I've been in phoneboxes abroad and not been able to see a number, and I've read that some don't actually have one

You can but try... if there's no number on the phonebox and you have a mobile try getting her to call you on the mobile - if you're lucky you might get a caller ID. I believe it's possible to call into phoneboxes but I'm not sure.

You can check that it is charging a landline tariff by using one of the cheap providers on the callchecker (http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/intcallchecker/spain). If the call can be connected at the 0.5p/min tariff then it should be safe for you to call it using your Tiscali account and not be charged.

If she's happy to go to a phone box, she could also go to a locutorio (Internet cafe) with discount phone booths. There are loads of these in Spain, mostly used by Latin American immigrants calling home. Of course, she would have to pay for the call but perhaps you could work out a way to send her the money.

Yes, you can call Spain Mobile from Skype.

However I wouldn't call Skype extremely cheap, they are along with Tesco the dearer VoIP providers.

You can call from your landline cheaper (even cheaper with other VoIP providers who aren't proprietary either) and a lot cheaper from your landline compared to Skype for calling Spain Mobile, using a low cost call provider.

A lot of people are starting to wake up to the myth Skype is cheap and is why people are moving to real VoIP providers or just using the landline when cheaper.
