Plastering Quote

Hi
Having a nightmare getting a plasterer (Cheshire) to board and skim our conservatory wall (i.e. ex exterior wall of the house)
Its a pretty standard size/shape, going round the patio doors from the dining room and into the conservatory, boarding over the old back kitchen door which has been bricked up, and then upwards at an angle either side to a point..
so far we've had quotes of
£85 - Guy let us down
£145 - Guy let us down
£195 - Seems a bit high
£250 - Seems really high
in terms of area, the side main side is about 5ft wide going up to about 8-10 foot (obviously decreasing with slope of the roof), around other side of patio door its at most 1ft.....
any views what is about the right price?

My OH would say somewhere anywhere between 145 and and 195 is probably not that steep especially if it is fiddly and there is some boarding, but it is hard to tell by a description. I know it is easy to say but I would go for reputation rather than saving few quid, obviously no-one would want to pay an extortionate price but ask round for people who have had work done and go on recommendation and reputation, it is more important, because you will have to live with the consequences and maybe pay to get it sorted out if they bodge it. It is unregulated and people are setting up willy nilly and "having a go". Good luck to you in your search. Getting the East Midlands Plastered0

I agree with madeane.
£195 is not to exspensive.

Sorry to ask in this post but it saves starting a new post and there seems to be people in the know here.
I have many dreaded Polyripple ceilings in my house. Can these be plastered/skimmed over? If so, is it a difficult job? What sort of cost would I be looking at for a room say 2m x 3m and 4m x 4m. Also, I have a number of badly placed halogen fittings, is it difficult to patch these up before plastering/skimming? I have lath and plaster ceilings if that makes a difference.
Thanks.0 -
Plastering prices vary greatly based on where you live, also the laws of supply and demand and also the skill and experience of the Plasterer, the state of the surfaces onto which you are to plaster etc, etc. Beware of ridiculously cheap people because they may just be starting out and not qualified or experienced, just desperate to get started. Word of mouth and references your best bet. Beware of people trying to rip you off.
As a guide you have to bond the ceilings first and if it just needs the normal skim coats of plaster you would be looking at maybe 120- 150 for the small one and 160 - 210 for the bigger one, or maybe more in some areas depending on where you are. It would be interesting to see what others say.
Hope this helps. Getting the East Midlands Plastered0 -
As for the Halogen lights are they the spots where holes are drilled in the ceiling? Getting the East Midlands Plastered0

Thanks madeane
Appreciate the quick response. Will certainly take your advice re experience and references. I'm having a wall knocked through and will need a plasterer to finish it off so thought I might get them to do some or all of the ceilings too. I live in London so I'd expect to pay more.
Re the halogens, basically some of them have been positioned badly in terms of layout and some of them being right next to ceiling joists. I'm about to have the loft insulated and was advised to get insulation hoods which require the lights to have 100mm clearance. This will require some of the lights to be repositioned which means there will be holes in my ceiling. I wasn't sure if these could be patched up before the ceiling is skimmed or whether the whole ceiling would need to be done.0 -
Just called OH for this one. He says it is possible to patch by attaching some wood behind and attaching plasterboard over (he has his ways!!), covering with scrim and then skimming. Do not let someone overboard your ceiling as you will end up with two thicknesses of plasterboard meaning the halogens will not sit in it,taking down the ceiling is one hell of a mess, and unecessary.
Good luck:beer: Getting the East Midlands Plastered0 -
Sorry to hijack thread, but how much do you plasterers charge for putting up plasterboard, I'm a carpenter and have been asked to board all the studwork I've just put up, I've only done it on daywork before and don't normally touch it but don't want to let client down as I want the 2nd fix after it's skimmed.
Thanks in advanceMaybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'0
