I know some science subjects have to have well-defined projects due to needing equipment and therefore people walk into a PhD rather than discover it and I can appreciate that it would fit better into a specific time but not all are like that.

Actually, science subjects are very difficult to fit into specific time periods as opposed to say literature based PhDs, as experiments often don't work and need repeating. This can be out of your control if it's not entirely clear why the experiment hasn't worked, or the equipment goes wrong. I spent two out of three years trying to get a series of experiments to work and then had to change tact. I have only really managed to scrape together some results in my final year.
What's with all the comments on here dissing science-based PhDs!! Science is very competitive and hard work. I wouldn't expect that anyone who has done a PhD in science would dismiss it as easy, quick, timely or thoughtless.
  • Hi, I am just finishing my Lab work for my PhD and expect to finish that full time by end of oct and then maybe just be in lab occasionally til nov/dec whilst completing write up. Recieved my last stipend this month so in the same position. I do have enough savings to help me through though because I always new this would happen so was really careful to spend as little as poss during my PhD so far. Although I was hoping this money would be a travel fund so not too keen to use it up!

I've decided to try and work part time from sept/oct so been applying for some jobs which will just cover my rent. But also discovered that some MSc students here need proof reading for their dissertations in Nov and another lady in the dept is doing some of them for £100 each so I am advertising to do the ones she can't manage. This also prompted me to advertise for proof reading in other depts for any foreign students, so I'll readvertise in sept. It prob won't bring much money in but any helps! Also, trying to do some tutorials for my supervisor for a bit of money. There's always little bits and bobs around to help earn a little money, so worth a look I think. I just hope I will be able to get a part time job asap to help, just got to keep looking.

The process of writing up a thesis in experimental science can often require little or no thought.

Wow - I don't think so!! I am doing a PhD in experimental science and writing up requires SO much background reading and thought! As much as any other PhD. I'm not sure what your discipline is, but don't be so dismissive!!
