Very pleased with Tesco delivery...

I don't know if ordering groceries on the Internet qualifies as "old style" but this is my main frugality board, so I'm posting it here.
Tonight was the second time I received a Tesco delivery. We don't have a Tesco's near us, and I wanted to be able to take advantage of some of their deals. When I saw that there are some very good discount vouchers available over on the Tesco Voucher board, I thought I would give it a try.
Based on what I've read, I knew not to order too much fresh/dated stuff. But, the things I have ordered (bread, pitas, some fruit) have all been well within date and in good condition.
I have gotten exactly what I've ordered - although I always click "no substitutions." They did substitute regular Tesco plain flour for Value Plain flour, but I had the option to decline it. I suspect that Value Flour is a rarity these days... I don't see it at Asda, either.
What really prompted me to give it a try was finding out that Tesco sells long-life milk at 50p a liter if you buy six-packs. That's 8p a liter cheaper than fresh. If you drink skimmed milk, then it's even cheaper at 44p a liter. We have small children, so I buy mostly whole and a few liters of skim. Not only do we save a fair amount, by buying 18 liters or so at a time, I don't have to go to the supermarket for milk. It's very, very hard to go to Asda and just buy milk! (Also... the little liter cartons fit in my fridge so much better than the 6-pint jugs.)
I also like Tesco's value bread better than Asda's. They're the same price (37p) but Asda's is just kinda weird. I know it's more Old Style to bake your own, but we have a lot of sandwiches and toast here and I honestly can't make a loaf that size for cheaper. In fact, I can't make a loaf that size. And I sure can't slice it so thin. Again, I can buy in bulk (I have room to freeze three loaves, so I buy four), which saves me from running to the shops "just for a loaf of bread."
Also, shopping online means you can take your time, calculating costs and not worrying about being rushed through a crowded aisle while your toddler tries to grab things off shelves. And, since I always book well ahead to get the cheapest weeknight slots, I have several days in which I can modify my order if I see something has come up cheaper at Asda or if I remember to add something.
I had a £9 discount voucher which, after paying £4 for delivery, still gave me £5 off my order. (Last time I had a £10 voucher). And I didn't have to use any petrol. And you get 1% back on your loyalty card vouchers!
So, I am very pleased with this form of shopping. I think I'll be ordering from Tesco about once a month or so, in order to stock up on certain staples and to take advantage of their promotions.
I may try Asda, someday, too.

Yes, i agree Tesco delivery is alot easier and saves me alot in fuel as i live 20 miles from my nearest tesco. I always use a voucher off the tesco discount thread!!
And with little children it is so much easier. They just help me unpack and wave to the 'tesco' man when he goes, it's so cute! I find i can manage my money better that way aswell0 -
That's great :j Tesco delivery has really come into its own now that I'm cycling to work
I'll move your post to the 5 star service board.

I've done Tesco deliveries for years and wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks to the wonderful people on this site who post codes I've saved loads!:money: My strategy is to order as the OP said to get to cheapest slot, check out the special offers first to see if there is anything on list on offer and then to stick like glue to the list. My lists are written based on menu plans.
I've made some mistakes over the years, one time I wanted 4 pears and ordered 4 bags of pears! I also bought 1 carrot rather than 1 bag of carrots! But sometimes you get bonus items, many times I've received things I haven't ordered, recently got a free sponge case and some lamb escalopes, the best was 24 cans of Stella Artois!
With 2 young kids and until last years working full time I'm not sure my sanity would have lasted without deliveries. Even now when I'm not working anymore I still do it because I can get discount vouchers and save money. I tried going to the supermarket recently to do a proper shop and I spend much more money as the special offers weren't so obvious, its a bit harder to work out it product a is cheaper than product b, I couldn't go and check in the cupboard to see if I actually needed this product and there were lots of items that jumped off the shelf straight into my trolley!!
I should be on commission from Tesco as I'm constantly trying to convince other people to give it a try!0 -
completely agree. thanks to the easy way to spot special offers and the help of MSE and HUD stalwarts posting points and money off codes I turned a £145 order into £102 with £10 vouchers to come.
I have been fickle but am now totally loyal (but don't tell them that), and I do ubdulge myself by getting a Sunday delivery (a lifestyle thing) but I am a huge fan.I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine0
