disability living allowance, is my son to young?

hi, not sure if anyone can advise me, but it worth a try i guess  .

my son is 5 months old and has occular albinism, its very confusing and hard to explain but i'll try. its a rare type of albinism where the pigment in his hair and skin are normal (not white like the only type of albino i'd ever heard of) but he has no pigment in his eyes. all we know for certain so far is that his eye sight will never reach driving standard. we're awaiting more tests to find out how bad is eyesight will be, when they will be carried out as of yet we dont know. hes also extremely photophobic, bright light hurts his eyes, well even on a cloudy day its still to bright for him, so he'll have to wear sunglasses or a peaked cap to shield his eyes all year round.

my mother inlaw keeps telling me to aply for DLA, but isn't he to young? surely we have to wait for more tests to be done to see how bad his eyesight is? i have looked at the forms and there is a section on wether your child is registered blind, but we wont know that for a while yet.

any advice will be welcome, anyone claimed DLA for a baby with limited sight?

thanks guys

You could always ring them up and ask, I'm not actually sure on the age limits.

  • dla care can be paid from 3 months and older, however you not only have to prove that the child has care needs but also that they are "substantially"greater than that of a child the same age
dla mobility is from 5 years and older
tbh its doesnt sound like he`d quailify, but the only way to find out for sure is to either apply or discuss it with the dla at balckpool
    good luck

In the case of children I believe that you need to prove that they need more care than a child of the same age. I think it that age it could be difficult BUT I would definately recommend speaking to someone as it could be very helpful to have things in place if needed.

There was an older child who had this condition where I used to live. As far as I can remember, her care needs were not really that much greater than a child without the condition.

I would agree with the others, definitely research claiming DLA on behalf of a child (calleyw's links are very helpful), but I would be surprised if he qualified, at least at this stage x
    Gone ... or have I?
  • There are local companies out there who will help you fill out the forms when applying for a child.
My friend has a 2 year old son who is profoundly deaf and the local carer's network put her in touch with a company who helped fill out the forms and she has received DLA for him for the past year and a half.
