Attitude towards money

Evening all,

I just wondered if anyone else's attitude towards money had changed since embarking on their debt free journey. My parents commented today that for the first time ever I seem to be responsible with money (I'm 32!) and it got me thinking. I now respect my money much more and am much more protective of it, in the past I would not have thought twice about bank charges, now I would be really upset if I got one!

Anyone else changed???

Lorna

My attitude has most certainly changed. I've finally realised just how much money I used to waste. Now that I've changed my ways I'm so much better at managing my money and have realised for the first time ever that I do earn enough to live a decent life without credit.

Even though I'm now debt free there is no way I can move away from the security of this site, it keeps me in line and the challenges encourage me to continue to make the most of the money I have

Yup - I have done a complete 180. I never used to realise the value of money, and now I realise just how much I get paid and, more importantly, what it is worth. I really evaluate every penny I spend now whereas before I would just whack it on the credit card and not care what it eventually cost me. I haven't paid for anything with credit for five months now.

I even plan to move flat without spending credit and just using the money I have - six months ago I would have seen it as a great reason to go and buy lots of things, now I think about what I want and how I will save to get it.

Completely understand, the value of money was something I never appreciated before. Now I know the balance of my bank account at any given time and I don't need or want to live on credit - it is a complete 180!

I have always been pretty good with money, however since embarking on my recent challenge, its got me thinking much more about money and how i would waste it on little things, such as a chocolate bar i didn't need, or an expensive drink, even though i had plenty at home. Its especially got me thinking about how i use my money in relation to buying groceries. I would always do a shop and put my shopping away, throwing away food that i had previously bought and had gone off. Now i make a real effort to use up the food i have first. Its just made me look at how although i had some savings before, i wasn't planning for my future with the money and needed to look at how my money could work in the future for me.

Great thread by the way, I think it is useful to sometimes realise how much we have changed our thinking to remind us not to go back to our old ways.

Yeah, I bloody hate it now, it's a constant headache. Don't mind dealing with other people's money budget but mine makes me sick.

I hate the fact I seem to get a kick from not spending it and from denying all the theives/rip-off merchants/tax man/retailers of every possible penny - I'm jealous of my dippy family who can spend on credit on fun things, enjoy them without a care of where will come from or if it appears.
  • Totally agree, i value money a lot more now than i ever did.Using credit for 20 YEARS! and what a change it has been ,but for the better.

    Fantastic thread!

Although I have only just started on my debt free challenge (currently over £62k debt) I must admit that the biggest change in me has been my impression and value of my money. I always think 'twice' before making a purchase now - and it has definitely saved me money already...

    Good luck to all.

I get "the guilt" whenever I think about spending. It usually works to stop me :rotfl:
