  • I used it for my car which is less than three years old so no mot needed, and has a private plate on and no problems. Disc arrived in a couple of days and the best bit is not having to stand in the queue at the post office.

I've only ever renewed my car tax online (car hasn't long turned 2 year old and didn't have one before then) - the first year I did it I was invited to do so and had to have a special code... I'm so thankful I've never had to queue at the post office!

Electronic MOT might be an issue next time around however so it is worth noting that possible crossover problem... insurance shouldn't be an issue as I'm on a 9 month accelerator program anyway...
The only computer error is a human one.
  • Would this still work for O.H's old Moggie which is one of the 'Free' tax models?

What I find amazing is that they know you are insured. Big brother or what. Personally I do it ALL online. Shopping, car tax, banking......when you live in the middle of nowhere (Cornwall) then you have no option.
  • I went to the post office last year to get my road tax.I gave the cheque to the girl at the desk for 6 months tax.
Then she gives me a disc for twelve months!!! I honesty didnt realise until i got home .
But anyhow they didnt do me for it.Just kept writing to me to see if i could explain it.
I didnt bother and just taxed my car again after the 12 months were up no problem!
So I guess my point is that computers dont make mistakes like this so try your luck at the post office

It's not worth it - they'll only make the mistake once in a hundred, by which time you'll have lost out because buying tax in 6-month blocks is nearly 10% more expensive.

Sorry to resurrect this old post, but I didn't want to start a new one unnecessarily.

I have just got my first electronic MOT and wanted to buy my tax online, however my V11( the tax due reminder) doesn't appear to have the 16 digit reference number on as required by the site.

There is a Fig 1 on the page that tells me the number should be in the yellow box at the top right hand side of the V11 document, but although I have a big yellow box, there is nothing in it except the words "For official use only".

I have searched and searched and cannot find the number required. The number under the bar code on the document is too long and there are no other numbers that fit the bill.

Has anyone used this service got any idea where I should be looking?

Just to avoid any confusion I have found the document reference number on the log book document, I am refering to the V11 "your tax is now due" reminder document.

In my experience, if there isn't a 16 digit number on your tax disc reminder, then you will be unable to buy it online.

I think, however, if you can find the number from your V5 and put that into the website along with your registration number, it will find your car and tell you when the tax is due, and may possibly let you do it electronically.

Bear in mind that the earliest you can buy your disc is the 15th of the month in which it expires - e.g. 15th March (Wednesday).

Thanks, pinkfluffybabe, I didn't think to just ignore the place to enter the reminder number.

I did know about the 15th of the month thing though - I was just getting ready and making sure I had everything I needed.

I've tried it and it will let me past that stage without the reminder code.

Typical though, isn't it, that they put a system into place and then don't adjust the paperwork correctly to allow people to take advantage of it?

    Thanks for the advice.
