Hi to all MSEr's,
First time on this board. We are redecorating our house and have used full blown vinyl papers on our landing staircases. We are now in the process of choosing which paint. Any advise or tips as to which type of paints should we go for? Silk, eggshell, softsheen or matt?
Mind you we need to decide by tomorrow as the bloke who's doing it will undercoat it starting tomorrow. He said that he'll be using Glidden paints, are they any good? We thought of using Dulux trade paints. We've also decided for a neutral color possibly magnolia, but if anyone has anyone has any recommendations or suggestions will be much appreciated.
cheers

glidden paints are made by ici - the same as dulux , they will do a reasonable job , not quite the same quality as dulux trade paints tho . imo softsheen is the best one to go for0

The bloke who's doing it suggested eggshell because he said that it's hard wearing. I thought although (no experience) that silk or gloss would be better but I could be wrong. I have 2 school age children that sometimes rubbed the walls most of the time. So, would soft sheen last longer in quality as well, I mean not easily fades?

i would agree with egg shell or soft sheen. I think silk is a bit too shiny and have never heard of anyone using gloss on their walls only on woodwork.0

Hi guys,
Just an update: We decided to use eggshell and gardenia color then the decorator bought glidden paints as what he suggested but told us that he didn't realise that it was £10 dearer I think around £29 for 5 liters and asking us for additional £10 on top of the quote that he gave us. The quote didn't specify what type of paints he's going to use just mention emulsion paints. Does he has a right of charging us more?

if he specified emulsion on your quote and then you decided to have eggshell which is more expensive then he is within his right to charge more , is it really worth quibbling over a tenner0

Depends on what was agreed, but me personally, wouldnt even ask you for the tenner, I would just swallow it, goodwill and all that, plus, there is the chance you would employ me again, so for the sake of a tenner, I wouldnt even bother telling you that I paid out an extra £10, but thats me.:D0
