Petrol price protest

I just received the following text in an eMail. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting it here. What a good idea! Count me in.
If you are concerned about rising fuel prices, please read on:
See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it. We are paying
around 89p-95p a litre now. Soon we will be faced with paying £1 a
ltr.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day"
campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just
laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves
by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it
was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can
really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and
the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is
CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS
control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up
more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are
going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the
pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting
ourselves. Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest
oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling
any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce
their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have
an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol
buyers.
It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...
keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of
people!!
I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at
least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)...and those 300 send it to at least ten
more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches
the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION
consumers!
If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each,
then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level
further, you guessed it.....THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (and not
buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this
email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION
people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! I'll bet
you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting
together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please
pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO
THE 69p >>a LITRE RANGE. It's easy to make this happen.
Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda, Tesco,
Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc... I.e. boycott BP and Esso.
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!

Nice idea, but I can't see it happening. No one will sell lower than they paid for it. Oil prices are high and we can only hope they will go down. We have neither ESSO or BP in our town of 50,000 anyway. Only Tesco and Asda and Texaco.NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

It's a stupid idea anyway - the cost of fuel is high because of tax. Now buying from Esso or BP will not motivate the Chancellor to reduce tax. The oil companies make barely any profit on petrol anyway - they don't have any real room to manouver.
And if the tax was lowered another would just have to go up to compensate.0 -

We are paying less of a % of tax on fuel than we were 4 or 5 years ago.
The cost of oil has rocketed due to world events.
Face it folks, the price is never going to drop dramatically. Maybe 5 or 6p here or there, but never are we going to have cheap fuel again.
Anyway, cheap fuel promotes climate change.A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain.0 -

I'm pleased to hear this idea has been posted in other threads. It sounds like word is getting around!

I agree completely that the cost of fuel is high, mostly because of tax. People mention the extortionate duty but there's also 17.5% VAT. It's a scandal to be loading so much tax on this one area of life. I also agree the oil companies have little room to manoeuvre but the rascal in me thinks we might as well create a rumpus somewhere (i.e at Esso and BP).

Did you vote for this Government? Despite world events, oil is still very cheap in the Middle East, USA and other countries. It's tax which makes our fuel so expensive.
>cheap fuel promotes climate change.
How many people do you know that have cut back on car use?

That's all very well but this is still :spam: do a search and see just how many threads have been posted already, this garbage has been resurected more times than DrWhoFour guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -
You have to put it somewhere though. Most EU countries now charge similar or higher prices for fuel. If the government lowered fuel duty it would have to put the tax somewhere else - it was pointed out in the Times a couple of days ago that if Gordon Brown hadn't frozen fuel duty last time there were protests (which ended the fuel tax escalator invented by Major's government) he would have an extra £12bn a year these days.George_Bray wrote:I agree completely that the cost of fuel is high, mostly because of tax. that type of comment just goes to show the clique-like mentality of the type of people who regularly post on here. newbies are afraid to post due to the risk of someone with a high post count gunning them down. you can see it in newbie's posts.
someone was merely trying to help others and maybe doesn't actually know how to use the search function on this board, after all, it is not a very user friendly layout on the board.
it is a very helpful website but i really can't be bothered with SPAM SPAM SPAM comments, not original and not funny.A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain.0 -

I'd hardly consider someone with a sign up date of Dec 03 to be a newbie, and would think someone with such a sign up date would be competent enough to perform a basic search.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0
