What to take

Anyone have any suggestions as to food to take to hospital we have been told to bring some food as we will be in all day for an outpatients appointment, been told we can use the staff canteen however i'd rather pack our own and save a bit of money as we will probably need morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner.

any ideas?

thanks raffe

The hospital canteen should be very cheap, im not sure if this applies in all hospitals but i used to get a main meal for less than £2, then if you do take food with you for snacks or sandwiches for lunch, you wont need to take as much. Would be worthwhile giving them a call and asking what their average prices are first though.

Make sure it is the (subsidised) STAFF canteen and not the general public canteen! Our local hospital has a snack bar/coffee shop and it is not cheap.

All the hospitals I've been to lately have one canteen, but give a discount to staff badge holders. Prices variable ...

I used to work at a hospital and the staff canteen was definitely cheaper than anything the public had access to (public didn't have access to any canteen in fact, they were restricted to what they could get in the main commercial concourse).

This was a very large and well-known teaching hospital too.

However, I knew from working there that there were no checks on who went into the staff canteen. So long as you looked like staff and knew how to behave it'd be fine. About 2am some Saturday nights I'd go there with a mate or two. As we were quiet, humble, well-behaved and acted like staff, they had no way of knowing we weren't. We'd go in, get a cheap burger, eat it and leave.

Oatcakes are always a good standby in my book. Esp with some of those little portions of cheese and some fruit - v handy picnic.

Don't forget to bring drinks too
