wow a VISA card from age 11, that's pretty good. i remember having only a cash card when i was 11 and a solo when i turned 13.0

I got my first debit card from the scallyfax when I was 19, 8 years on and I still have never made it to full cheque guarantee card though, if I had a debit card from the age of 11 I think I would have tampered with it or something, as far back as I can remember I have been in to computers and electronics and building my own stuff, I would probably be sitting in Durham Frankland jail now doing a 10 year strech for fraud lol

Terrible idea. 11 year olds are not mature enough to have a debit card. They'll use it on the internet to gamble and other naughty stuff. They'll also flash it around and get robbed and also spend more then they have in their account (Lloyds TSB under 19's account has a £50 buffer when making purchased with a Debit Card).
Bad idea Lloyds.0 -
Young folk in our area, who have free school meals, or are in care get £40 per month on a Maestro card to spend on activities. The purchases are restricted using particular merchant numbers, They can use it for go-karting, karate, sailing, horseriding, theatres.

Because people 18 and over never spend more than they have in their account without asking first. I mean, it's not like there's had to be a huge nationwide campaign to reclaim bank charges because nobody, be they 11 or 25, can be bothered to manage their finances properly any more...
11 year olds may, as a demographic, act more irresponsibly than others, but there's nothing to say Lloyds can't set the card to have a very low floor limit (possible) or do what they did with the Visas on their basic bank account and limit their usage.0 -
Yip, the VISA debits start 4659 dont have a floor limit and get authed everytime.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? That's a bit of a sweeping statement. My brother (now 12) has had a Solo debit card since he was 11 and happens to be very sensible with it. He has always been very mature for his age and I'm sure there are plenty of other kids that are.:happylove Tori Bellatrix :happylove

Yep, the LTSB card is 100% authorisation if there are not enough funds the payment should have been declined and the bank is fully within its right under Visa International rules to bounce the payment, and I am sure they know it or they would not be doing this. I think now the fact this can and does happen will become more widespread knowledge as retailers make mistakes.

It is certainly a long way from my day, I remember I wanted one and coincidently a TSB Bankcard when my parent arrived (I was working with the Midland Bank at the time but for some reason the Switch card never seemed to appeal to me in the same way as a real Visa card).
I tried and tried to convince the branch manager (do you remember them) to give me one when I was 16 and in the end he did offer me £50 cheque card, which in itself was unusual. I think as my parent were with the same branch and we had all held an account since I had been born there was an element of trust, oh bank managers, trust, and agreement on a hand shake the good old days. My friends say I am turning in to a grumpy old man named after the TV programme.
I think we are simply doing what we have always done and following the Americans, if you look at the pre-prepaid card era in the UK it was predicted "this will never take off here", now it is estimated as a market with potential profits in the region close to pay as you go mobile phones. I recall the Americans issued Visa cards to teenagers I think with parental consent, maybe not as young as 11 when I was 16. There is also the issue of catch them young and real them in, which was the philosophy behind the student account with the banks competing on features.
But with regard to it not sitting right, I agree 11 is too young not entirely sure what age I would think appropriate if banks were told "you cannot issue these until someone is x years old". Although the banks can bounce transactions when they have not been authorised correctly and this rule went worldwide as of April this year I am sure it will not take long for word to spread that such and such a shop will take it and you can get practically anything you like damaging retaliers confidence (just like many people who should know better do when an ATM is spitting out 20's but thinks they are 10's) in accepting cards both here and abroad from all of us.
