How to connect broadband?

My dad has just had Whitecable broadband installed and because he did not have an ethernet plugin on his pc they installed it on his laptop.

He has now installed the ethernet pci card and is trying to connect the pc to the broadband but whitecable did not give him anything to do this with.

I have tried to connect it with Ip address etc I can see on the laptop settings but I think I am missing something crucial out as it will not connect.

Could anybody give me any advice as my dad cannot get through to whitecable to get the problem sorted out.

He really does not want the broadband permenantly connected to his laptop.

WE would be most grateful for your advice.

ok, little rusty on this but since no-one else has replied (yet) here goes.

setup - assuming you have the simplest possible setup:

Internet -> Cable modem -> Desktop

Also assuming that you are using the same ethernet cable between the modem and the desktop as you did for the laptop (so we know the cable is ok).

Is the ethernet card recognised / installed proerly etc in the desktop?
(ie: if you go to the device manager you can see the card listed under network connections - no yellow triangles there?)

You say you have used the IP address you can see on the laptop - does this mean you have a static IP address (one that stays the same all the time as opposed to one that changes / or can change everytime you connect to the internet)?

If you go to Start -> Settings -> Network Connections is the ethernet card shown there, hopefully under LAN or High Speed Internet connections?

If it is have you tried the Status / Repair options (right click on the device)?

Also, do you have everything installed regarding the connection? If you right click and select Properties you should see a section saying 'This connection uses the following items' - can you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) listed in there? If not you will have to install it (click the Install button, select Protocol and follow the steps there to add TCP/IP)

Sorry it's not a simple answer but it's a case of finding out where everything is first (well it is for me ;))

    Thank you for your reply.

I should have said first off that the laptop he has got it connected to is XP but the PC he wants it on is ME.

The Ip address does not seam to change. Each time it connects on the laptop I can see the same ip address in the details section on the left hand side of the page for the LAN but when I go into control panel network connections etc it does say in there obtain ip address automatically.
