£850 quote from P&D for the following...

First time in this part of MSE - normally I squirrel money away but here I am all intent on spending some!

Have had a quote from a P&D to paint front room & dining area (open plan), hallway, landing, bathroom, DD bedroom, all ceilings and skirting in stated areas, filling holes and cracks, painting 70's dated brown wood bannister & under stair cupboard & stairs woodwork, skimming the upstairs landing ceiling, changing 2 doors upstairs and painting front door.

The quote is for him working alone and he reckons it will take around 2 weeks if not more.

I am based in London (South East) and I am supplying material which I estimate will come to no more than £300 after spending Saturday in Homebase (going for dulux). I am sorry I do not know dimensions but it is an average 2 bedroom terraced house if that helps!

That sounds cheap to me. I pay my decorator £120 / day, so at that it would be over £1200.

That does sound quite cheap to me, as there is a fair bit of work involved.

Would you be able to see any of his previous work, get references etc?

Can he start immediately?, or did you have to book him in?

But if he is a good un, then grab him, I cant help thinking that he hasnt much work on, or he is just starting up, and this is why he is charging this amount, you live in South east, so the prices are quite fairly high in that part.

Just out of curiousity, what part of SE are you?

Thanks for the replies guys. I really needed a pro's p.o.v IYSWIM

He has done work for my Mom amongst others in the past and tbh I think letting my Mom do the negotiating was a great move on my part. She brought him down from £1100 by playing the "how long have I known you card/how many new customers have I referred to you in the past how many years card! And I just gave it the poor single parent doe eyes

He is able to start on Wednesday and is coming with me to Homebase tomorrow to pick supplies up.

I live in Birkbeck (halfway between Anerley & Beckenham) and the quotes before him were a lot higher - one even said he would charge £2000 even with me supplying the material.
