Not free - but hey, you get what you pay for :D

  • I have found AVG Free edition for anti virus the best and Zone alarm for the firewall.

Both have paid for versions but the free versions are just as good.

I have used both for 3 years and have always found them easy to use and excellent
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

Anti-Virus: Avast 4.6 home edition - will never hog your resources, auto update, free daily update, free.

Firewall : Sygate personal firewall - will never hog your resources (like Zone alarm), Free.

Anti Spyware: Microsoft AntiSpyware , daily updates, active monitoring (like anti-virus) probably better than anything similar out there. Free if you have a genuine copy of Windows.

AVG for anti virus: free, works and updates are quick - availability wise
Sygate Personal Firewall for firewall (obviously ;)): free, works, simple to set up and in comparison to others it's very unobtrusive in my experience

for spyware i use spybot and ad aware - both free, i just wouldn't touch MS for anything like that - they have enough trouble keeping their OS's and browser sorted out - rather go to a specialist but that's just personal preference / bias :)

Personally I think that if you like Norton, and it works well for you. Just buy another years worth of updates. People will recommend other products, but antivirus and firewalls at the end of the day are a personal choice. There is no 'best' antivirus. The 'best' one is the one that works well for you. Buying another years worth of updates will also save you the hassle of uninstalling all your current Norton products. Installing new antivirus and firewall. Then having the hassle of setting them up so they work correctly for you. Norton is already there, already configured well for your system and already works well for you. Why take a chance with other products? You may not like them or get on as well with them as you currently do with Norton.

I've been updating my Norton antivirus for a couple of years now. I find it works excellently for me, and despite what others say about Norton slowing the computer to a crawl. My system is faster than most others I have worked on without Norton.

You wont need to buy the latest version of Norton to update it. Just pay for another years worth of updates for your current version, then enter the new registration number they send you. This is cheaper, and a whole lot easier.
