Complicated situation advice needed

My boyfriend has a mortgage with his best friend. The best friend has hit some financial problems and they have decided to sell the house.
As my boyfriend doesn't really want to move and we are actually wanting to move in together would it be possible for me to buy his friend out? Where would I find information on that and would my boyfriend need to apply for a whole new mortgage or could he just stay with his current bank?
Any advice would be greatly appriciated

If they can agree a value, then it should be easy.
In your b/f's situation I would tend to wait a bit.0
