Bank mistake - charge them for your administration fees

If your bank makes a mistake with your account, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER phone your bank (particularly if on a 0870 number) or pop into the bank to raise it. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Instead, write back to them, (as they wrote to you). They charged you an administration fee to cover their “reasonable administrative costs” (as they see it). Charge them the same rate to cover your administrative costs for writing to them to highlight their error!

A friend of mine did this to his bank in the early 1990’s. His bank not only corrected their mistake (as highlighted in his letter), they also credited his account with the mistaken amount, but also their charges as he requested, and also his administration fee (matching theirs – after all, as he pointed out, the admistration fee must be reasonable as they had charged it).
