grrr... So Cross with British Gas!!
This is going to be a long post, but I am so cross!!
We moved into our new home on 1 March, and the suppliers were British Gas, for gas and electricity. I duly rang them up to tell them I had moved in and gave them meter readings. I was then told by the girl on the phone that the previous occupants had applied to switch suppliers - to Scottish and Southern, I think. I asked if I could stop this, as I didn't want to switch suppliers (not without getting me £30 switching fee!) and was told it was too late, but that if I wanted to come back to British Gas I would have to swap for 28 days then return.
I then rang up Scottish and Southern to change the "new" supply into my name, which they did.
During this time I received the final bills from British Gas and bills from Scottish and Southern.
After seeing Martins advice, I decided to switch to the cheapest provider, who happened to be EON. Apparently this all went through fine, however after my first direct debit came out, I noticed it was only half what it should have been. I rang EON who informed me that there was an "erroneous transfer" for the gas. I didn't really understand and the girl didn't try to explain it to me. She just said that my account had gone and that I should ring round the suppliers to find out who had it. (VERY ANNOYING).
After speaking to lots of suppliers, British Gas said that THEY had taken my account back without my consent and that they would return to EON per my request.
A week later I got a letter from BG addressed to the previous tenant - I opened it (probably shouldn't have, but glad I did) and it said "Welcome to BG Mrs XXXX (not me). We have now started supplying your gas. Your meter reading is 123456 and you have agreed to pay by cash."
ARGH!!! that is NOT my meter reading, as I have not provided it to anyone, and BG are aware that the old tenant moved out 6 months ago, and they know that I NEVER wanted my account moved to them.
I rang them up, and their excuse was that Scottish and Southern had taken the account without consent (whos I dont know) and thats why they had taken it back from EON. It doesn't really make sense to me as I have been in the house for nearly 3 months. After much heated discussion with me saying I hadn;t authorised anything, and the customer service people saying it wasn't BGs fault they have "agreed" to give the account back to EON.
AGREED??? Surely its my choice who I am with?! I bet in a months time, I will still not be with the supplier of my choice.
Does anyone know what to do about this, other than ringing the gas companies? I have spent a small fortune on phone call s (due to being on hold for so long), and I am so annoyed about it.
Sorry for the long ramble - basically I am asking if there is anyone I can complain to?
