Unfair Bank Charges

Can someone please help!!!

On Thursday evening we went to the Halifax bank to make a deposit in the ATM machine as some direct Debits were due.

On Sunday afternoon we again went to the halifax and noticed there were insufficient funds in our account.

We phoned the Halifax and they explained that if you make a deposit on a Thursday it will only clear on a Tueday - we have banked with the Halifax for over 10 years and this has never happened before we have deposited funds before and the following day several direct debits have been taken out and all done without any problems. Is this something new the Halifax has introduced?

The Halifax explained they will waiver the bank charge this time, but we may need to change the dates for our existing Direct Debits as they will not waiver any charges again, they explained the only reason they will waiver the bank charge is they feel we do not understand the proceess even though we have banked with them for a long time

The Halifax also stated that if we actually go into the bank and deposit in the Deposit Machine, funds will be available within 24 hours. We explained that we both work and cannot get to the bank until at least 6:30pm, we were told that the Halifax hours of business are 9:00am until 5:00pm but in some banks it can be until 8:00pm- but unfortunatley not ours.

This will cause chaos as we have numerous direct debits and we will have to make sure the funds are available well in advance to make sure we do not incurr these fees again on this new rule which the halifax seem to have brought in suddenly.

Is there anything we can do regarding this or do we just change banks???

Familiarise yourself with your account T&C's...http://www.halifax.co.uk/HICA/pdf/halifaxtandc.pdf (page 9 deals with paying cash in).

Carry a larger float in the account.

    Apply for an overdraft facility.

    Increase your existing overdraft facility.

Cancel DD's and deal in cash.

Move your DD's back a bit.

Get someone else to pay your cash in during business hours.

You could change banks, but you'll probably find they're all the same with regard to your particular situation.
