Leave a bit earlier when the traffic is quieter for a faster and more economical run.

Work out a proper route - a longer route where the traffic flows will be more efficient than a shorter route that is all stop-start traffic.

    Good tips above.
I have improved fuel consumption on my missed driving route to work by 8% over the last 3 weeks.
I know the route really well now so can get my foot off the accelerator well before turnings and similar measures to avoid braking, use down hill stretches for accelerating as much as possible and just keep enough speed up hill to hold top gear.
Also as I have a diesel, use the engines torque range to accelerate reasonable quickly up to top gear cruising speed.
I also use a diesel fuel additive Millers Diesel Sport 4 which gives me a 5% improvement on top of the above.
I'm actually beating the official combined fuel consumption figures on my car by 1-2mpg. Mostly A and B road driving with some town traffic.
