Car insurance named driver query

Hello,
Having done a search for "named driver" none of the articles that came up exactly fitted my query - so I hope someone hasn't just answered this - but I did look!

I am 24yrs old, have no no claims bonus (AFAIK - I had my own car insurance but only for around 6 months and that finished 18 months ago)
To my great surprise, if I have my mother as a named driver on my insurance, it plummets from a little under £800 to around £550 with £150 voluntary XS.

Obviously I'm seriously considering this but I don't want to affect my mum's policy in any way should I make a claim - but am unsure of the details regarding second drivers.

So..my question is:

If anything happens to my car when my mother is NOT driving it, should any resulting claim affect anything to do with my mother's insurance in any way?

If not - what possible logic makes my premium £250 less with her as a driver?

I hope to sort this out today so any quick replies would be excellent!
Thanks very much!

  • If you had an accident and the policy is in YOUR name with your mum as a NAMED DRIVER - this will not affect her insurance.

If your MUM had an accident in your car as the named driver - her insurance will be affected if she makes a claim as it will have to be stated when she renews her own insurance.

Premiums can be lowered if you add people of a certain age and gender to your policy. Eg, My partner who is 29 lowers my premium by £300. Add me to his on certain vehicles and I can either increase or decrease the premium!

    Thanks for the reply!
So what's the logic of decreasing the premium by adding her as a named driver if it does not affect her insurance if I make a claim?

It increases the average age of the drivers ;)

Which is why the price rockets if you try it the other way around (it decreases the average age)

Ahhh...still doesn't make any sense as far as the insurer goes though - but hey - if it gets me cheaper insurance...:)

I can confirm that it would not affect your mum's insurance if it was your policy and she was just a named driver.

    Personal Experience.

    oops.

For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!
