Bank account closed after letter 1 sent!

Hi
I used the template letter to ask for my statements and enclosed the fee, within 2 weeks I got a bank statement from Natwest with the balance outstanding (account was overdrawn) showing 0.00 and the entry read "BAL TO BBD FINCON" and the new balance box "ACCOUNT CLOSED".
I called telephone banking and they can find no account and have no idea what the entry meant! Now I had been making payments through equidebt monthly, when I called they said they had no idea what I was talking about and that Natwest had not closed the account! I then asked Equidebt if they had bought the debt and they had not! Of course they insist I continue my agreement but I'am not sure. Has the bank written of the debt as I know all that is outstanding would be charges. It just seems very strange that out of the blue a statment is sent with no other word from Natwest. I have not used this account since 2002 and receive statements twice a year (last one March 2008).
Any advise greatly received.
Thanks

Update on this, Equidebt have had confirmation from Natwest that the account has been closed and I no longer have to make payments via them , also Natwest confirmed that the bank has closed the account, I have agreed that I will not pursue a claim which I estimated would be in the region of £2300 in charges as the amount in OD was approx £2k. All in a good result thanks to this site and forum!!
Many thanks0 -
