  • Just a quick question:

Is the Sainsbury's magazine free? One person above said it is 1.20 - is this true?

Also what does it look like and what size - I will have a quick look in there tonight but dont want to be on forever scratting around for it.
  • It's £1.20 orange on the front October date.

The tu voucher does work- feel a bit weak at the knees.Do you think its unethical? I suppose if Tesco think it is worth their while to take them, that is their decision in the marketplace. As for Sainsbury- surely they won't mind us taking money off Tesco?
Went to get some more this afternoon...

This is unethical in my opinion. Tesco's policy is clear: they accept vouchers for total spend i.e. £5 off of £20 NOT product-related coupons. £5 off of the TU range is a product-related coupon which Tesco's do not sell. I would think a manager who was clued up about Tesco's policy would follow this logic. The fact that these scan through is just due to the similarity in their barcode systems. Till operators accepting them is down to ignorance.

Ok, so you can argue that if Tesco wants to be stupid enough to accept them then that is their fault, but look at the bigger "coupon" picture. These coupons get to the main office at the end of the week and they say why on earth do we have TU product coupons from Sainsburys being taken off of our main grocery bill...and lots of them>?? To me, its the same as people going to the self-scan and using coupons they know scan but that don't come under the head office policy - its fraudulent.

I am happy to stand my case with a Tesco's manager and say, look, your head office told me I could have 1 of each manufacturer coupon taken off of my bill without buying the product but would you feel justified standing in front of them arguing why you have £20 worth of out of date Somerfield coupons that went through the self-scan (like some people do sneak through?) or why they should accept £5 off TU clothing?

This is where I draw the ethical line personally, you are welcome to disgree and go about doing your own thing - I respect that, but your actions will possibly influence your store to not accept any coupons or a lot less in the future no matter what head office say. This has already happened in my local Tescos - no internet coupons and a strict 10% of your bill.

This probably comes across as a bit strong, but I feel lucky to get 20% off of my bill with Joey tokens, or 50% off of it with Tropicana tokens on a good day, and this is worth the 10% I have to put up with when I get an "educated" till operator in the other Tesco's I now go to. I haven't paid full price for a shop in the last 4 months, so it all adds up long term, and I'd like it to continue :)
  • Got to agree with Bluep I'm afraid. The thought of someone stopping me and asking why I'm using another stores coupons terrifies me. I would be so embarassed. What if they barred you from shopping there again? I would just die !! Good luck to those who are hard faced enough to do it, but frankly, it's just not for me.
  • Me too, my attitude is pretty much the same as BlueP's. If I am within the head office policy I feel fine and will stand my ground. Sneaking things that happen to scan is like passing a counterfeit note. You may get away with it, but it isn't legit!
  • Don't kill the Golden Goose that lays the Coupon eggs!
  • I think you're right. the difference between the product coupons and the store ones are clearer to me now that I've read the comments on the site. It is confusing when Tesco say they take Sainsbury's vouchers without explaining which ones, but if they mean the ones you get in the post then these don't apply.
I am sorry if I've led people astray- the issues around this are not entirely easy to get at first. :o
Because the scanners will accept them it seems initially to be ok and part of their policy, but if it will have knock on effects then I won't use them.
Thanks to to those who replied to me- I've found your comments really helpful.

Thanks for this mcallister, I didn't mean to come across as critical in anyway, and I'm glad you've taken it in the manner it was intended. The only supermarket-coupons that Tesco's say they accept are the total-shop ones i.e. Sainsbury's £10 off of £50 etc... They "take the hit" of these ones in order to temp customers away from their rivals.

Any product related ones like the Superdrug 50p off of deep heat, may well scan but they catagorically state that they do not accept these. They can't claim them back off of the manufacturer (especially when its a Sainsbury's own range like TU lol).

There are people on this site that rejoice when the Sainsbury's magazine has say £5 off of a bottle of whiskey and it scans at Tesco's self serve but that is the same as not scanning £5 worth of shopping and walking out - in my book, stealing. People KNOW that if their shopping was checked, it would be rejected. And lets face it, if you've used them before and they come up as connected to your clubcard, a manager isn't going to take the old excuse "oh I was so confused, I didn't know that you didn't accept them".

Anyhow, stepping off of my soap box! Lets continue to collect great amounts of tokens and not pay very much for our shopping!! The legitimate way!! In fact, the Daily Newspaper Summary thread has details of a £1.34 coupons for Actimal today at a cost price of 60p!

Yeah I know what you mean. about 5 years ago my Tesco was excepting all coupons and I think the system was abused until the Manager decided to stop taking coupons unless you buy the product.

I think there will come a point if Tesco starts either losing money from vouchers or notices the quantity that they may decide enough is enough.

I am only raising this because its happened before.

Normally I let this sort of thing go, but this is practically an antonym
