someone other than BT to connect to for line rental?

Hi there, I'm new to these forums but do get the newsletter, which I think is invaluable!

My question is at the end, I currently use BT as my telephone provider, I just got my online bill and for the 3 month period I'm billed for it came to nearly £50 (I'm on the £10.50 tariff, free eve and w/end calls).

My gripe is out of that £50, only 20 pence was actual phone calls! We are a family of 4 and use our mobiles for the majority of calls as we got excellent tariffs from T-mobile (just upgraded so couldn't do anything about those at the moment anyway) so only need the BT line for connecting to BB internet (for which we pay Sky £40 per month which includes phone (why am I being charges for calls by BT?!) i-net and tv)

I wondered if there was a package around that would include the line rental too as I'm not happy about spending this amount of money any more.

Thanks in advance :)

(I'm on the £10.50 tariff, free eve and w/end calls).

If that is so, you also have nearly a years contract. So don't fall fowl of breaking it.

Best to stay with BT line rental anyway.

    Hiya, thanks for replying :)

I thought that may be the case. Is there any way you would know of as to how I can find out how much longer is left with them?

    Thanks again

Check your first bill - it will show the start and end dates of the 3 months in advance line rental.

I'm having a little trouble understanding how your BT bill can be £49.80 for a quarter though.

£10.50/month x 3 = £31.50 - so, if you're only making 20p worth of call with BT, what is the other £18.10 for?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I took it to be Broadband, but it was a guess.

Oh it's not they have Sky.

Unlss they are paying BT and Sky broadband but that should not be possible as you can only have one ADSL per line, could be they are being billed for a service they no longer have.

They charged me £4.something for payment processing, I'm guessing this is because I pay by debit card, not DD. Also they charge £5.29 VAT. I also incurred a late payment charge of £7.50 for last month as I paid a day late.

I suppose I can't do anyting about the VAT but if I changed to DD payments, they can't charge me a 'processing fee' and I wouldn't incur a late payment charge either.

Thanks for all your replies :)

I have an online account (sign up to it)

They will then send you an Email two weeks before payment is due.

I ticked the DD box but I pay using online banking and I get no payment processing charge either.
