Tips for getting around a PCs insistence on branded RAM!!!

I have an old HP server that I want to resurrect to use as a web server. I had some (non-HP branded) ram I needed to bring it up to minimum spec to upgrade it to MS server as it was running NT.

Is there a way I can get this server to recognise the non-branded ram? It just keeps coming up with an error saying that the RAM is not HP branded, and then refuses to acknowledge its installation - therefore killing the upgrade prospect.

Any tips - this is a first for me.

Thanks

A while ago I tried something similar and found that HP servers at that time would only accept error correcting (ECC) memory. Are you using that type of memory?

Think he has hit it on the head there, but it is possible for a manufacture to "brand" the spd so wouldn't spend o much on ecc ram as it is very dear.

Try and pick up some appropriate ecc ram cheaply to test, look to ebay or computer fairs, just get a small stick to confirm if it does actually require hp branded

Not sure how cheap this is here compared to what you have found.
