Alliance & Leicester Car Insurance Help Needed!!

Hopefully somebody can give me some advice.
I recently got a quote from Alliance & Leicester as they guaranteed to beat my renewal quote. I filled in the online details and true enough they beat it by £10. I then rang the call centre to confirm the minor details over the phone. Whilst doing this the operator managed to somehow get the price down further and beat the renewal price by £97.
Everything went through fine and I was offered insurance subject to providing proof of my no-claims. I sent the no claims proof the next day and I also called my current insurer to advise them of my intentions, all ok no issues.
A couple of days late I received the welcome pack with my insurance policy and certificate. The next day I received a call from the gentleman who processed my details to state that they had received my proof of no claims, but now they need proof of the renewal price aswell. I explained that I was no longer in possession of this as I had agreed and paid for insurance with them. He then started to panic saying that I need to do something for him as he’d made a mistake and it would be better for all if a contacted my current insurer again requesting another copy of the renewal price. I explained the potential drawbacks of this as I’d already advised them of my intentions and that I’d already agreed insurance with another company. He then asked me to lie to them and say that nothing had actually been agreed yet and that I’d like to read the renewal policy again. I was uneasy with this and declined. He then asked me to fill in my details at the following website www.insure.co.uk again guaranteeing to match the price that I’d agreed but with their own insurance (basically A&L are represented through Equity Insurance Brokers). He couldn’t get near the price so preceded to tell me that I’d need to cancel my agreement and put my through to the cancellations department. On speaking to them I advised then that I don’t wish to cancel and that I was being pushed out due to an error on their behalf, the cancellations dept admitted that the advisor had made a mistake and promised that a team leader would call back. I’ve waited 3 days now and no call, I’ve even contacted them to find out what’s going on and was told that the team leader is going to contact me.
Bearing in mind I have the certificate of insurance and policy where do I stand? Would I have to pay extra on my policy for their error or am I in a strong position having agreed the policy and having 2 people admit fault on their own recorded conversations.
Your help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Unfortunately the fact that you have a certificate and policy documents does not change anything. All policies have a cancellation condition whereby the insurer can cancel the policy by giving 7 or 14 days days notice in writing. If they want to force the issue they will use this condition to cancel.
Reading the T+Cs of Alliance and Leicester's offer it does clearly state: "A copy of your renewal invitation or notice from your previous insurer will be required", so I suppose they would be within their rights to cancel or offer their standard premium if it is not provided, regardless of any other issues.
However, I doubt that things will go this far. Somewhere in your policy documentation there will be a complaints procedure with an associated address and telephone number. Escalate a complaint rather than dealing with the usual customer service or sales staff.0 -
