Cheap First Class?

I've heard it's possible to get cheap first class tickets on a Saturday. I want to take my son to London on his 21st for a special day, but so far I haven't been able to find anything less than about £220. The journey is Birmingham New Street to Euston. Any suggestions?

Buy a standard class ticket and then pay for the first class upgrade (£15 each, each way) :j When do you want to go? Are you coming back the same day?0

There are 1st class advance singles listed from approx £30 upwards which MAY be available on the day you want to travel. (They are not currently being offered on Saturdays beyond 24 May)
However I'd be very wary of travelling between Birmingham New Street and Euston at a weekend for the foreseeable future - there are engineering works all over the place. Check that there are none on the day you want to travel - if you have to change trains, be wary.
You would be quicker (if there are such works) travelling from Moor Street or Snow Hill to Marylebone. There is no first class but the 'clubman' trains are better than average.0
