There seems to be no reason for this. Provided the Halifax account is the one linked to the kaupthing edge account they allow BACS or cheque deposits (see section 13) Looks like she's been quoted for a CHAPS payment which isn't necessary.

  • Thanks for your reply, I told her to ask for a bacs transfer, infact I wrote her a note to pass over the counter, but the Halifax said they charge £25.00 for a bacs or a chaps! I can't see this being right?

You can't do BACS transfers in the branch. With Halifax they can be done via the ATM, using telephone banking or online.

Thanks, does this mean that she would not be able to send the interest from kaupthing and icici, into her halifax current account?

Your original question was, of course, about sending money from the Halifax account. The problem with the payment out from Halifax was in trying to get the Halifax branch cashier to set it up - not that a BACS payment could not be made from the account.

Your second question seems to be about sending money to the Halifax account from the Kaupthing one. As you say that the Halifax account is a current account, I can see no problem in being able to send money to it - it is Kaupthing which would be remitting the money.

I may be wrong, but BACS I thought was free, even if the bank account was not with the bank that you were sending the money too.
I send BACS payments often and have never been charged and informed by my bank that they do not charge, I would therefore contact the bank and ask them to show you there terms and conditions as I dont think they should be charging you at all.

But how do you initiate a BACS transfer?
I bet you don't do it at the counter, but either by telephone or internet?
The bank was correct in that if you want a payment to another bank without a pre printed BGC slip the only counter method available is CHAPS.
