Handel is brought to present day Gaza in an edgy new production.
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD style="PADDING-BOTTOM: 10px; PADDING-TOP: 10px">Created within weeks of Messiah, contemporary audiences believed Samson to be one of Handel’s finest works. Now this rarely-performed dramatic oratorio offers contemporary resonance with today’s political unrest. Buxton Festival’s modern take on the Biblical drama brings Handel's masterpiece to the tense present day Gaza Strip.

The notorious Israelite warrior, Samson, is betrayed by his beautiful wife, Dalila, and taken hostage by the Philistines in Gaza. He is shorn of his hair and his strength, he is blinded and tortured. In revenge, as 3,000 of Samson’s enemies feast and celebrate his capture, he brings down the pillars of their temple, killing himself and everyone inside.

Daniel Slater directs an all-star cast, with Tom Randle in the lead and Rebecca Bottone as the seductive Dalila. Designer Daniel Potra promises a spectacular set and Harry Christophers conducts his celebrated period instrument orchestra.

Sky Arts are giving away three pairs of tickets to see </I>Samson at Buxton’s beautiful Opera House on Sunday 27th July at 5pm, with a complementary interval drink and programme included. All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is asnwer the question below.
