    Why not go to Specsavers?

I have four pairs at present, including prescription varifocal sunglasses, a pir of reactions & two ordinary, but fashionable pairs. The bill alays seems large, but I do get two pairs at a time.

I have been loooking for varifocal as well as qas quoted about 530.00 by D& A. I have been to Sepcsavers and they do seem cheaper with the 2 for 1 offer but i was bewildered by all the different types of lenses and finishes. I have only every worn reading glasses in the past. I was offered four different types of lense from about 80.00 to 159.00 and different finishes including ultra clear and polariod and reactalite!!
not sure what to go for. I will mainly use the glasess
for comp work and reading. Any advice gratefully received. I did also look at some of the online companies, but thought it would be better to get my first pair at least on the high street.

    Forgotten about this thread :D

My £600 specs were from Specsavers  shudder to think about some of the other quotes I had!
seem cheaper with the 2 for 1 offer
And no that offer was not on the table. ( if fact my prescription was not even on their charts.)

What ever glasses you finally get , I hope you are as pleased as what I am !!
  • Just to add to the melee.

I run an online glasses store, and make glasses for a living. ( and have done for a looong time) I'm not going to mention which one to avoid breaking the rules.

We do not and will not sell varifocals online, even though I could make alot of money doing it.

The tolerances for centration are so close that, although you may be lucky, you are unlikely to get the performance you should be doing from any varifocal you select.

The British Standard for centration tolerance on progressive lenses is only 1mm.

Also, with regard to the £600 Zeiss specs. It is definitely true that you get what you pay for. At the end of the day, if you are comfortable spending the money, and happy with the result then its all good.

I used to work for a High Street optician with an in-store lab. If customers couldn't afford expensive specs we used to recommend the following:

Buy your frames as cheaply as possible elsewhere i.e. from the local pound shop or direct from the manufacturer or from another optician. Make sure there are screws in the sides of the frame so the new lenses can be fitted into the frame.

Then take the frames to the cheapest optician you can find who supplies the lenses you want. Ask the optician to put new lenses into the frames you have bought elsewhere. This is called a "reglaze", at most you'll be charged £20 for the privilege on top of the cost of the lenses and the frames.

Most High Street opticians will be only too glad to do this for you.

I work for an internet company that does 'reglazing' only. We do single vision, bifocal and varifocals, you're right it's much much cheaper than the high Street and we supply the same product. Have a look at www.ciliaryblue.com there are others on the net though, that will do it also, don't want to be accused of spamming!

    Varifocals from £49.00

I've bought two pairs of varifocals from these guys, both decent and cheap compared to specsavers, I was originally recommended to these guys by a work colleague
