Help... Overdraft charges! Arghhhhh

Hey everyone, how are you..
Basically I just signed up here a minute ago because I need your help/ opinions on overdraft charges... it would be amazing if someone could help me out with a conclusive answer!

Im 18 years old... still in school in fact, full time. A few months ago I went to buy an Oxegen Festival ticket from Ticketmaster.ie.... and as usual, I was bombarded with the usual handling charges, hidden charges, etc that they always seem to trarget me with when I'm buying tickets for this event. This wasn't really a problem... I kept topping up my bank account until I was sure that my funds would be able to cover the tickets....

However, the next time I went on my Halifax account to check my balance, it stood at -£2.34.... it seems a debit card charge which I was never even warned of had pushed me into a small overdraft.....

Excellent... I then get the famous email from Halifax :

"We are writing to make you aware that as you do not have an arranged overdraft and you have gone overdrawn, you will be charged a monthly Unauthorised Overdraft Charge of £28.00. This will be taken from your account on the 31st May 2008. Please make sure that you have enough money in your account to cover this charge.
We will also charge you debit interest on any overdraft."

£30 for an overdraft which I didn't deliberately make, that didn't even total £3, and was paid pack within five days?! I'm a student, and there is no way in hell that I'm going to pay this without questioning it first.

My parents say I should just close the bank account before the date given, but I get maintenance payments for my education paid into this account, and if you could see the size of the form I have to fill in for it, you'd know why I'm in no hurry to change banks :D

Well, anyway, sorry to bother you all with a over extended, simple problem, but I reckon if anyone knows the answers, its people on here. So please tell me this: Do I have to pay this? Especially since I am still at school? And If I do not, how do I go about claiming the money back?

Thanks very much :D

  • Can anyone help? I have put in a claim to the HALIFAX for the last 6 years of bank charges which is currently on hold. Can anyone tell me if you can claim back any charges incurred after the original claim & if you can, how do you go about it?
