Another GHD thread - wide plates or not?

I've tried straightening my hair in the past, and always given up, because my hair is so thick and has a persistent natural wave. The other week I tried my flatmate's ghds and I'm converted! Now thinking about treating myself to a pair, but I don't know whether to go for the normal plates or the wide ones. My hair's shoulder length, quite thick and prone to being wavy/frizzy. Would the wide plate straighteners speed up the rate at which I can get my hair done, or should I go for the normal ones as they look lighter and easier to handle?

I have the wide plate ones and love them. They are better for thick hair.
The only down side is you can't use them as curling tongs and they are no good for short hair.0 -

Yes I second that, I have the wide plates as my hair is shoulder length and very thick so I find them easier for doing the job. I have used friends thin plates and not found them as good to manage.
Good luck0 -
My sister has normal plates, infact everyone I know who has GHD's have the normal plates (even me, ssshhh)"I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -
Yes it might, but it is very unlikely. :undecided"I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"

Really? How is that? Most of my friends who have used mine have stated either "I didn't know these existed" or "I couldn't afford these ones but wanted them". So not entirely sure why it is very unlikely.
Also not everyone has think hair, and some people want to use them as curling tongs as well.0 -
My daughter has very long thick hair & wide GHD.
I have med-long length thick hair & normal plates.
I prefer the normal plates, but she prefers hers.
If its only shoulder length & quite thick, go for normal plates.0 -

I knew they existed because I researched them and when you are on the internet the wide plates come up anyway when you search for GHD's.
So I find either of those reasons unlikely."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"

They are not that much more expensive and when you are spending £100 on some straighteners I hardly think an extra £10-£15 is too much of an issue.

Fair enough but you are a male therefore would not get wide plates as unless you have shoulder length hair you would have no use for them.
What do you propose the reasons are? I also wonder if my friends are lying?! I somehow doubt it seeing as on special occasions many of them come to use mine even though they have their own normal ones.
My sister can't use the wide ones as her hair isn't very curly or thick to start with and she doesn't like it too straight. Mine make it poker straight which is good for me as I have thick hair.0 -
I have no idea for the reasons why people don't wide, maybe I just don't associate myself with people with thick hair!!"I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
