Calling International with a Virgin line

HI all,

I have seen the latest newsletter mentioning the call charges to international lines using a BT line. My parents would like to call relations in NZ a bit more often but it is extortionate (they have a Virgin Media line). I wondered whether anyone could comment on the call charges via the 0844 companies using a Virgin Media line?
Is it a matter of trying it once, then trying to check your bill online and assess the damage, or is there another way?

Cheers
Andy

"CheapestChat" works OK with a Virgin line - you call via a normal landline number (so free at the weekend) and then New Zealand is 1.1p/minute

Some people have reported difficulties getting through to some 0844 numbers with a Virgin phone. Don't know if this is still the case.

First Telecom's "TopUp&Talk" service also works well with a cable line, a clean 2p/min charge (no connection fees/minimums etc).

See the below (click through to about page 40 and search for the precise 0844 code they're planning to use).

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
