New broadband - no DSL signal? Ideas please?

I'm helping someone who has just registered with PlusNet
The wireless modem router (2Wire 2700HG) reports no DSL signal.
I've removed the faceplate on the master socket and plugged the modem only (via a filter) direct into the socket inside - so no internal wires connected.
I've tested the modem on my line (also with PlusNet on the same exchange) and it works! (even with the other person's login details!)
PlusNet advise that BT will charge £144 + VAT if the fault is not theirs.
Is there any way I can be sure before calling them out?

I would say that the exchange end is faultyEx forum ambassador

if its on the master socket and there are no other devices connected ie via extensions then double check filter used
i would think 2 wires going straight to the router and it not working is a good indication of a fault on the lineclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
Update
Just to report - BT found a wiring fault at the exchange - so no £144 charge.
In fact I feel BT should compensate for this.

Good luck with that.
You wouldn't believe the issues i've had with BT. Their engineers are next to useless. They even charged me for an engineers visit because he couldn't find the fault - despite the fact it still existed. I got the money back but they are still a shambles when it comes to broadband maintenance if your problem is anything other than straightforward.Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......0
