Central heating/Hot water issue

I have no independent hot water & central heating.

I can turn then central heating on at the timer upstairs but get nothing at all.
I turn on the Hot water & i get both Hot Water & the radiators get hot, I can also hear the pump going for the central heating.

I have just bought the house and its my first so I have no idea about the history or about anything!!!

I have just signed up to British Gas Central heating care, still awaiting the letter with an apointment time.

Shall I wait till the gas man has been and looked at the boiler & then spring it on British Gas? Or will they not help me out with this at all?

If the pump starts after asking for hot water, I would guess you have a two pipe fully-pumped system - assuming it's not a combi.

There will be a 3 way motorised valve or two 2 way motorised valves diverting flow to rads and/or hot water cylinder. Either your timer is kaput and not powering the valve, or a valve is duff - most likely as the actuator motors fail on these regularly.

There are limit switches on these valves to confirm position, and the pump will not run if the valve has not made the correct position. If the pump runs when asking for ch and hw, I would guess that you have a 3 way valve and that it is not moving from its centre position, i.e feeding both hw and ch. The valve actuator is most probably the culprit, but it's impossible to confirm without some electrical testing.

    Hope this make sense...
