Can they make me pay??

My motorbike insurance was recently up for renewal and as a good MSE disciple i shopped around and promptly found myself a much cheaper deal:j
I cancelled the DD for the insurance and set up with the new insurer, thinking that was that.
The old insurer though has kept writing to me asking for written confirmation. I finally got round to writing to them, thinking that really was that this time, but no, today they have asked for the money between the new insurance date and the date they received the letter. Can they make me pay or is cancelling a DD all the notice you have to give them??
Cheers for your advice in advance!

Cancelling your dd didn't cancel your insurance, just the way you were paying for it.

Quentin is correct; you didn't cancel your insurance, just your payment. I suggest that you send them a copy of your current motor insurance certificate confirming that you have cover elsewhere and explaining that you felt cancelling your direct debit was enough. Confirm to them in no uncertain terms that you have no intention of claiming from them for the period between the expiry of the old policy and the date of your letter and see what they say.

If you still have trouble after that, I suggest you post a new thread on here again and ask for further advice (such as whether the Financial Ombudsman has anything to say on the matter). Hopefully, it won't go that far.
