I work for another division of Toshiba and like all manufacturers there is pressure to find components at lower prices. The difference with Toshiba (and Sony I guess) against other cheaper brands is the level of testing that needs to be carried out before a component is approved for use.

We have an ancient Sony portable and use it most days without any problems.

I understand that Hitachi outsourced their TV production to Turkey a number of years ago which maybe why their quality has dropped.

Yes - the cheap Hitachis are made by Vestel in Turkey, and so are the cheap Toshibas and Mitsubishis too - same factory that manufactures the cheap Bush, Alba, Goodmans, etc. TVs. If you want one of these cheap TVs, ignore the brand name and go for the cheapest you can find...

All of these TVs are manufactured by Vestel and contains their 11AK19, 11AK20 or 11AK37 chassis'.

Even Sony are outsourcing production of the cheaper end of their ranges now, but not to Turkey... ;)
