Help burning a dvd - format problems

hi all, i downloaded a few films and clips i wish to put on dvd so i can watch it on my tv's dvd player. The problem being the fims on my computer are the wrong format. They are .AVI and i apprently need .MPEG to view and burn these onto a dvd is this correct? and where could i get a .AVI - .MPEG converter from? cheers for any help
