Car Insurance in the US

Hi all,

My fiancee and myself are off to Hawaii to gwt married next year. At a couple of stages we will be renting a car. Can someone advise me on getting insured for these periods? It would seem that a relatively cheap rental soars as soon as insurance is taken into account and as we will be using different rentals I reckon there must be a good way to insure ourselves for the entire period for a cheaper amount. Can anyone share any experience in this field?

Thanks.

It is always cheaper to hire a car for the USA in UK. You get that with full insurance.

Car rental in the USA is structured differently in that most American motorists can drive a rental car on their own private car insurance.

You can buy an annual motor insurance in the UK for £99 that covers you for CDW/SLi/UMP etc. Most of the Major Rental companies will accept this.

However as stated above it is still cheaper to rent(with full insurance) in the UK through firms like AirlineNetwork etc. - do a search.
  • Thank for the advice. We are actually booking flights through United Airlines and getting a free weeks car rental out of it. One of the hotel packages later on in the trip also has a free car included. I think that given the price for insurance quoted by United was something like £209 for the week the £99 annual charge sounds excellent. Who is this through?

As maclean2 above states it is insurance4carhire.com.

However(and it is a big 'however') firstly ensure that the rental car firm supplying the 'free' car will let you use your own insurance. The only reason you get a 'free' car on fly/drives is that they make a huge profit on selling you their insurance at hugely inflated prices. Some rental firms(Dollar for one) will throw every obstacle in your way. They are not supposed to but they do!
So get it in writing from United Airlines and the Hotel.

You can hire cars for the USA from UK firms for about £115 a week upwards and that includes all insurance.

If the firms will not accept your insurance, you will be better off not taking up your offer of a 'free' car and arranging your own.
