Putting in a RSJ?

How much would it cost please approx to knock down a supporting wall and put in a RSJ?
Would be cheaper to have a set of french doors put in instead or would we still need some sort of load-baring support?
Thanks,
BFx

You need to register the work with your local council you have to pay a fee for this, then they will give advice and check that the work is done to the correct specification to meet current building regulations. At conclusion of works if they are happy they will sign the work off, and you can then give this as evidence that the work has been completed soundly should you wish to sell the property. He may well advise that you get a structural engineer in to give advice on how the job should be undertake and make recommendations about materials. Whether you put doors in or not, you are weakening the structure of the house if the wall is load bearing, so you need to get the aforementioned involved to ensure that the job is done correctly, if not you may well disappear under a pile of rubble!! Getting the East Midlands Plastered0
