Nationwide won't talk to me

Options
When I tried to check my flexaccount balance online this morning, I kept getting confronted with the message, "Your details have been entered incorrectly. Please try again" I tried again but no joy. This happened to me about 3 months ago and I had been using the same details for the previous 3 years or so. I know that the details that I had been entering were correct. Anyway, after 3 unsuccessful attempts to log in, you are blocked and have to apply for a new password number which is sent by snail mail. Being aware of this, I only tried twice and then closed my browser and tried again in a new window for another 2 goes. When I returned from work, I tried again to no avail.
In an effort to resolve my dilemna, I used the contact form on their website, when I sent the message, I was confronted with the message, "The page you requested is no longer available". I tried this again in a fresh browser with the same result.
Not to be beaten, I tried the mouth to ear approach, a telephone call, alas after 20 minutes of Prime time type music and the constant reassurance that my call would be answered as soon as an adviser was available, I gave in and hung up.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem when trying to log on to Nationwide online banking ? I have not changed any settings on my computer since the last time that i successfully logged in (I don't know how to), nor have I installed or got rid of any software. I haven't even emptied my recycle bin (one of the few things that I know how to do)
I'm off gor a rather long walk to the cashpoint.

Hope you haven't answered any dodgy emails recently
  • Sorry to disappoint, mine is working fine.
    Large Charge

We all get heavier as we get older because, there is a lot more information in our heads!

So I'm not fat, I'm just really intelligent and my head couldn't hold anymore, so, it started filling up the rest of me!

try phoning an option to open a new account :p
  • I didn't think much of it at first but I had a similar problem yesterday while checking my account online. It took 3 attempts to input my details. I knew I had the correct information but I kept getting the same message as you. And no I didn't answer any dodgy emails! (surely anyone using this site would know better!). It must be a problem with their website.
  • Nope, no problems. Could be your firewall - is it set-up right? Or you could have some spyware installed on your computer which you may inadvertently caught.

Could also be a problem with your browser - do other websites work OK?

Mine is working fine as well. I would be inclined to go for the password reset - even if it does take a couple of days by post.

  • I always log in through egg money manager and have had no problems either.

What browser you using? I have had trouble with both opera and firefox on banking sites before.
  • Managed to speak to a real person at 5 a.m. this morning who confirmed that I had been excommunicated because I had incorrectly entered details 3 times.
I know that I entered the right ones really though.
I use I.E., only 'cos I haven't yet made my mind up which one to change to. My windows firewall is enabled and I use A.V.G. and spybot 2 to 3 times a week.
What's the score with this egg money manager ? I'm relatively financially astute but technologically rather dense.

Is the Nationwide password case-sensitive, and you might have typed with CAPS LOCK on? Can cause all sorts of havock.

Egg Money Manager (EMM): you have to have an Egg account to use it. It allows you to enter Egg and other online account logons, and then you can access all your accounts by only logging into the EMM. A word of warning though - - you can easily forget the login information to your other accounts if you use EMM, so making some sort of fallback provisions is a good idea.

I have seen these central money managers before and have always had a couple of reservations. Firstly about the speed of response due to the process having to interrogate multiple systems (I know it shouldn't be that bad because it should work asynchronously). What are response times like?

Secondly, and more importantly, I would be concerned about security. Do you not have to supply Egg with your account number and also your 'secret data' and pin? If so then that means this information is now stored on multiple computers. If, for the sake of argument one of these computers gets hacked or due to an operational error reveals some data then who do you blame? Could there be legal issues here about who will refund any monies?

I know with encryption algorithms this should be unlikely, however this process may need to use a two-way encryption algorithm (i.e. the data can be encrypted and decrypted) which is a security hole. I am not convinced that this can be achieved using one-way encryption (i.e. date can be encrypted but can not be decrypted) but maybe someone else who is far better at security than me could explain.
