Basically Paypal said, instead of offering recorded as an option, I should just charge it as part of the postage costs.
I tried saying , I had other things for sale, such as sim cards, but who wants to pay 99p for a sim card then have to pay almost the same again for postage ?

What they inferred was I should bump my postage costs up and just send everything recorded !

As told to me by a colleague....

A friend "won" a mobile phone on ebay, paid quite a lot of money via paypal, all seemed fine. Then through the post she received not a phone, but a letter.

    Obviously complained, but lost. Why?

Sender / scammer had got "proof of postage" certificate for this letter, but there's nothing on it to say what was sent (ie letter, packet, parcel) - so s/he waves it at paypal saying "look, I sent it"

So the friend has lost all their money

I've not heard of this before, no idea how to work around it apart from maybe if it happends to you take photographs of what you receive, with postmarks, stamps, labels etc and try and show that to paypal.

Simple yet devious, thought you should all know...

If you go to the e-bay and auctions part of the site you will see that this should not have happened. Proof of posting (POP) is not enough for Paypal to side with a seller. A seller has to prove an item was delivered, not just posted. (You don't mention they had to sign for it so I assume they didn't)

the simplest way to avoid this sort of thing happening is to only sign for the delivery after checking what is in the package.

Good idea, but is it possible & allowed for the postie to do this?

If she complains to Paypal they should refund her the total cost, irrespective of proof of postage.
I sold an item to a woman in Cumbria last year, posted 7 exact same out, all with proof of postage. The other 6 all arrived, she said hers had not and claimed against me.

Paypal did not want to know, even though I showed a proof of postage to her and them. Basically Paypal said I had to show proof OF DELIVERY to back up my claim.
The item was sold with postage costs and the option for recorded delivery, she did not choose that.
Paypal ( bless the, clawed the money back, so I was out of pocket ).

It isn't just buyers beware, but also sellers beware. I had an ongoing arguement with Paypal, saying it was wrong for them to dictate terms such as this and it was upto the buyer to pay extra for recorded delivery !!!

The insurance covers you as a seller incase an item goes missing. A buyer won't want to pay for insurance because if the item goes missing they will get their money back anyway. Only way to cover yourself for losses is to either pay for the appropriate postage method PP accept as proof of delivery or don't give your customers the choice.

nope,no postie would(or should) allow the item to be opened before signature
couriers are not held to the same postal regulations

Can I ask what the letter said? I have sold thru ebay for years and I have always understood that POP was insufficient to prove delivery--however in this case something was delivered. Goods not as described would be a good route with the "letter" as part proof.

  • The proof of postage reciept has listed

    POST OFFICE ADDRESS
    TIME & DATE
    SESSION ID
    DESTINATION (COUNTRY - EG UK)
    QUANTITY
    WEIGHT*
CLASS (1ST 2ND PACKET, LETTER ETC)*
    TOTAL COST OF SERVICE*
    DESTINATION ADDRESS (INC POSTCODE)

    POST OFFICE SERVICE INFO:
    08457740740

Surely therefore this seller can't produce a valid receipt because of * (these) being consistent with a letter and not a parcel
