Insurance policies - deceased person

Hello
An elderly relative has recently died.
Can anyone advise me how to find out what insurances policies they may have paid into.
I know several insurance men called to their house to collect over the years but I don't know what companies they were all affliated with and if all these have expired and / or been claimed.
Thank you

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. jinja, I presume that there is no paperwork sitting about the house. Is there enough of an estate that warrants the use of a solicitor .. I wouldhave thought it would be their job to pull together all the assets. The problem with insurance companies is that you will not be able to simply phone them and ask because the Data Protection act will get in the way... you need to put it in wroting enclosing a copy of the death certificate (could be timely and costly).
Hopefully someone else will come along and offer something a bit more constructive.

There's a web site you can go to for banks & building societies etc. Have a look here.0
