Hi guys
I'm going to South Africa at the end of July and so took a trip to the Dr's today to get some malaria tablets.
My parents are going too and they both got theirs on prescription and paid the prescription charge of £7.10. When I took mine (the Dr issued a 'Private prescription' does this make a difference??) to the pharmacy I was charged £73 for mine!!
This is ridiculous for something I need..... anyone else got theirs for £7.10 or has everyone found that the £73 price tag is mandatory\//
Thanks

Wow, £73?! I took Malaria tablets when I went to India but I don't remember how much they cost. I'm guessing your parents are retired and this is why they are getting a reduced price?0

It is very unusual for the NHS to pay for anti-malarial pills: your parents may have been incredibly lucky, or perhaps there are other reasons.
Anyway, bear in mind that a wide range of anti-malarial tablets are available, with great variation in price tags. The most modern and far away the most expensive is malarone, but for most people and most destinations other, far less expensive, pills are just as good.0 -
shopping around can also make a huge difference, but I guess it's too late for that.0

it's not about the cost, it's about getting the right ones for the region you visit, you could spend £1.96 on something that won't work, likewise youc ould be spending £15.50 for something that doesn't work when you could have spent £1.96
as the Asda website says
"You should ask your doctor or pharmacist if these are the right anti-malarials for the part of the world you are visiting."

Hi
I'm off to the Dominican republic shortly too :j
I asked my doc what I needed to take and he recommended chloroquine. I declined a prescription cos I'd been told they were dead cheap at Boots or supermarkets chemists. Went to my local Asda last Saturday and the pharmacist was very helpful and thorough. Looked up the country, asked about hotel/meal arrangements, asked about any medication currently being used. I came away with a pack of Avloclor for the princely sum of £2
