New DEFRA Noise Mapping Website

DEFRA have finally launched their new noise mapping website.

Not everywhere is covered, of course, but the Govt need to keep doing things like this to spend taxpayers' money.

But even if you live somewhere noisy there's very little you can do.

Environmental health only work office hours.

I love the fact that somewhere in Europe a room full of people have met to come up with the gloriously-entitled: Good Practice Guide for Strategic Noise Mapping and the Production of Associated Data on Noise Exposure

    Marvellous :D

This is about judging how noisy an area is for traffic though, not for complaints. More to help in a decision of whether to live somewhere or not.

Nice work if you can get it. Meetings like that cost taxpayers thousands.

I'm busy and lazy so can't read all that - is all noise taken into account? (road/aircraft/factory etc etc) is it broken down into these different sources?

Having lived 6 miles from EMA directly under the flightpath for the first 26 years of my life, I'm fond of aircraft noise, but conversely I can't stick road noise (bumpkin that I am)

Visiting a place several times at different times of the day and listening is one way of telling. Looking at a map that says Manchester airport has airtraffic noise is very useful I'm sure.

Bit like the property EPCs that tell us nothing we don't know already - these things are what the government does best, and we all fund it.:undecided

But surely it's fairly pointless anyway? I used to live in SW London, directly under the flightpath to Heathrow and next to a railway line, and I can honestly say that it was a 'quiet' place to live, as that kind of noise tends to fade into the background eventually and it was a pleasant suburban area where neighbours were (generally) considerate of other people and of their environment. I now live in SE London, I'm not under any flightpaths and I'm a fair way from a railway line and it seriously is the noisiest place I've ever lived, in terms of neighbour disturbance, music, dogs, cars etc etc, as it's a different kind of area where people seem to be much less aware of how noisy the things they do can be. I'm sure however that where I'm currently living would score 'less' on these charts, even though in real terms it's a 'noisier' place. It's not about aircraft noise, I'd rather see a chart showing how many complaints the local council have had about noisy neighbors ...

i went to a school by a railways station, every time a train went past i'd jump a mile and the building would shake. after less than 12months I didnt even notice or hear the trains, i just became used to it, so its not really that important surely??

thanks for posting though pastures new might help someone :)
