i feel ripped of when i see items for sale on ebay that are far more expensive, than you can buy brand new in the shops. are people really so silly as not to shop around before buying. also i see a general pattern that it is the newbies to ebay that are paying over the odds. being one myself i will never buy on it again, although i have never been ripped of in the 12 items i have bught.
i think the general feeling is that ebay is cheaper and bargains can be found ? i do not beleive this, maybe when it first appeared yes but not now.
so am asking for your help to find as many items that are overpriced and can be bought on the high street or internet for cheaper than those highway men selling on ebay.
even !!!!!! turpin had the decencey to wear a mask.
i shall start with
tesco wooden train track turntable average ebay sale £8 +p&p
they sell it for £3.47 in store, but i have only found them in the larger tesco exra stores.

What does it matter what something can be bought for on the high street? All that matters is what people believe the item is worth to them through ebay. I think you misunderstand the concept of auction and free market trading..the price of an item is buyer led, not seller led.
No one forces buyers to bid, this is a free country.
I am both a buyer and seller on ebay and am very happy with both the prices I get for my items and for the prices I buy at. I've just bought myself an item from a seller in the Us at approximately half the price I can get it from a shop in the UK, and that includes post and packing.
I also admit to buying things from my local stockist to sell on at a profit, if I didn't buy cheaper than I sell I would make a loss surely?
Even the example you quote of the train turntable if you wanted one and lived say in The Scottish Highlands would you prefer to pay trains fares down to London to buy it or to buy it on ebay and have it delivered to your door?
I'm sorry if this post seems a bit grumpy it's just that I can't understand your point really.

i have to agree with soolin,
surely if someone pays a higher price than they could have got elsewhere, then that is their lookout..
how many times have you bought something on the high street (even after checking all shops along the hight street). only to get the item back home, set it up, then sit down to wath tv or read a paper and find some where else (not 5 mins) from the high street was selling it cheaper!
personally I add the P&P cost onto the item price, if this is dearer than i could get the item thru amazon then I dont bid for it.smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....
:cool:0 -
I agree with Soo and robnye. You don't force people to bid. It is the convenience of shopping on the net and having it delivered to your door. Obviously if people could go out and look in shops to get the items cheaper they would! an example of this is a Tv & Dvd Player I have just bought my daughter for christmas I paid £90.00 for the Tv (Disney princess) because I was lucky enough to be in the store on a 10% day (Actual cost £99.99) and people have bought a few of these as they are hard to get hold of and selling them on for profit. I was lucky enough to find this instore but if I couldn't get one I would have looked on here! Basically it is what you are willing to pay for the item. I would happily tell anyone where to get great bargains but where do you start?

If anyone wanted to know where I got mine....good old woolworths!
anyway enough waffle

no thats not true, i feel that you are ripping unsuspecting people off. it is one step away from a scam.
r u telling me that if people could walk into tesco and buy a turntable at £3.47 you wouldn't and rather pay 3x more just for delevery ?
i think people are conned into it.
i was under the impression it was against ebay rules to sell something that could beebought in the high street, or something like that. i do not know the correct rule.
wre supposed to be moneysavers helping everbody save (thats everyone) not trying to sqeeze cash of people . i understand the capitalistic veiws of making a few quid out of someone, these boards and forums are to help peole not con peolpe and if i can help someone to save some money by not buying from a ebay seller who is just in it for themselves then i feel justified in what we are trying to do on this site.A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

''r u telling me that if people could walk into tesco and buy a turntable at £3.47 you wouldn't and rather pay 3x more just for delevery ? ''
But you said yourself that this turntable is only available at Tesco Extra, a high proportion of people can't just walk into a Tesco extra and buy it.
I recently paid near £100 for a book as a gift for my husband, it has a cover price of less than £20. I was happy to pay that as a special anniversary gift, if it wasn't for ebay I wouldn't have got it.
''i was under the impression it was against ebay rules to sell something that could beebought in the high street, or something like that. i do not know the correct rule. ''
Nope..no such rule. Where do you think 99% of the stuff on ebay comes from?
I missed out on the Argos offers as I was ill and so have bid on several digital cameras that I know were bought cheaply from that source. I haven't won any yet, but it is my choice to bid knowing that the seller is making a profit. My only alternative is to pay higher prices and buy direct from a shop.

Oh dear oh dear..
Madsamurai i do not understand your point either.
When you buy an item in the shops do you buy at the first you go into or do you shop around?
I assume you shop around
On ebay you have to check the prices similar items have sold for.....you also have to know your market.
ie
What price can I buy on the hight street or internet. How much is P+P. And most importantly is the product available.
If you do not do your research of course you will pay too much.
It is also upto you how much to bid you are not forced to partake.
remember "caveat emptor"
On the other side of the coin I also sell items. On one occasion I sold a dect phone and it went for 99p. I have also sold other items that have gone for less than the cost to me and at under 50% of UK street prices.
Bet you would be the first to trumpet your great bidding skill and acumen.
If you don't want to buy from ebay thats upto you.
Also be aware that to sell an item on e-bay will cost you your listing fee £1-£3 on average. Your Final Value Fee of 5.25% on first £30 an then 3.25% after that. If yo accept PayPal wich is almost a must you will also have a further 4.4% + 30p to pay. So its not all plain sailing for the sellers either.
You should really look at this more logically.
Right thats my rant over.......0 -
Yeah I have to disagree with you madsamuri......
I have the same opinion as soolin!0 -
so if people want to bid higher then they can buy it for you have to mail them and tell them not to cos they can get it cheaper?no thats not true, i feel that you are ripping unsuspecting people off. it is one step away from a scam.
[/quote]r u telling me that if people could walk into tesco and buy a turntable at £3.47 you wouldn't and rather pay 3x more just for delevery ?
No, we just laugh at the ones who pay 3x more
I think you're on drugs,i think people are conned into it.
They have the right to bid or not to bid nobody forces them.i was under the impression it was against ebay rules to sell something that could beebought in the high street, or something like that. i do not know the correct rule.
So where do they get the stuff from to sell? or would you rather they all sold links?wre supposed to be moneysavers helping everbody save (thats everyone) not trying to sqeeze cash of people . i understand the capitalistic veiws of making a few quid out of someone,
Mail everybody registered with Ebay then and tell them to sign up here.these boards and forums are to help peole not con peolpe and if i can help someone to save some money by not buying from a ebay seller who is just in it for themselves then i feel justified in what we are trying to do on this site.
Who should Ebay sellers be in it for? if i sell something the money is for me, me and errr, yep... me
If somebody wants to overpay for something then good for me.0 -
Exactly s_b! ;D0

In an indirect way I think it is a great thing for people to do. People who have a child or children to look after and can't go out to work because of this can do this as a little business, brings a little bit of money in and teaches skills as you have to deal with all sorts of people, from the research, cleaning the product, taking a decent photo, planning how much P&P is going to cost and how much packaging you are going to need, selling the item to millions of people, answering queries dealing with descrepancies....and of course the computer skills involved....need I go on? I think that it could give people a hobby, an interest. Make people happier!
To actually buy somehting and sell if for more than you got it for is a good feeling....like an item I bought for £3.95 and someone in america bought it for £159.00.....
and like soolin....I bought something I would have had to trapse around the shops looking for ......and where do you stop? I would pay more for an item in America than a person over there would if they went to a shop because I can't get in the car and nip over! its convenient! I am in control how much I would put in the bid box....if I win than thats great....but if it gets too expensive I will stop and perhaps find an alternative in the shops!
If this Turntable was advertised as "tesco Turntable thingy" than surely someone would have thought "oh I shall pop to tesco to find it" or even ask Jeeves or Google where I can find a cheaper one!!
I always buy something to then look back and find it cheaper elsewhere! thats life!!
Sounds to me madsamuri like you may have got carried away on something and was stung?
