agree with ssedd if you have abit of nouse and can read a manual then would go for a wired one all day long.
i have a texecom all singing and dancing alarm that does everything from normal alarm, fire alarm, shock sensors in the conservotory and can be set either remotley or from the various keypads i have in the house and garage including of text/phone dialer and it cost less than £350.yes it was ardous but it was well worth it. and the cheepest and probably the best for individual set ups is http://www.brewtime.co.uk/section-list.asp?a=7&b=8 where you can buy a kit. i would go for the texecom ultimate alarm kit 2 and add as you require to it and this model has a digital keypad so you can programme the alarm to your individual requrements. ie alarm zones when your in(good for the kids),constant alarm on the garage plus loads of other configs and its so easy to program and play with.
need anymore info let me know

I've just had a bit of a bargain off ebay, a new yale premium alarm HSA6400 for £154 all in.

I have also asked about an extra 3 PIR's and 2 door contacts and been quoted a very reasonable £75.

Question is how many do I need in reality? Just moved into a large 4 bed house which has a front door and entrance hall leading to a lounge, dining room and kitchen. There is a conservatory off the dining room.

The back door leads into the utility room which has in integral door into the garage. The garage also has a side door along with the normal conventional front door.

Any help appreciated as I'm not sure whether to get the extras.

I would go with contacts on the front door (letters etc could set off pir) and PIR's on all downstairs rooms with outside windows and doors plus one PIR on the upstairs landing. You may want to think about adding one in the garage if the system allows it.

I downloaded the installation booklet from the Yale website to see if that help me gauge what I needed and I've decided to get the accessories at a later date if needed.

However, another problem. The item on Ebay is advertised as 100% wireless yet the booklet says I have to plug the control panel into a wall socket. I dodn't have a socket in the entrance hall

Am I better off with wired after all perhaps?

That's a pain but you could always keep the control panel in the room next to the exit and increase the delay time for activation to compensate. Not ideal but a reasonable work around.

Thanks Alan, I'd thought about that too. Also maybe to install it at the rear door and put an extra keypad at the front. I'll decide when the box arrives !!

They seemed reasonable prices to me and read a few threads on mse praising them.
